We are delighted to present for sale (once again) this stunning example of a very rare Land Rover® Series 2a 109 “Dormobile” Conversion. We have had the privilege of selling a couple of these before, over our past years of trading, but this is by far and away the best example we have yet seen… let us describe why!
As can be seen from the photographs, this vehicle has been rebuilt in times past onto a new Galvanised Chassis, along with uprated parabolic springs for better comfort. The rebuild also featured a cosmetic refurbishment and so this vehicle looks as good from the outside as it does underneath. Externally, we have a host of features, some of which are specific to the Dormobile – the pop up roof with windows and opening ventilation -quite often these are in poor condition and are patched and/ or leaking – but as this is in excellent and functioning condition, we can only assume it must be replaced. There is a front roof rack fitted for luggage for long trips, side and rear steps for easy access, defender mirrors for better visibility whilst driving, tow bar with electrics, mud flaps, grab handles and auxiliary lighting for the awning section. It also has a superb Turner Winch fitted, should you get caught out when camping further afield! In short, this is a very well appointed and presented Dormobile.
The interior follows the same pattern and is equally impressive. The current owner is a great friend of ours – he has done some of our very best interiors as he is a master upholsterer – just look at that interior, in stunning leather with incredible detailing – all done by his own upholstery business. There is no other word, other than stunning. All the seats fold flat to create a double bed or two single beds, depending on the desired format.
What normally lets Dormobiles down like this is a poorly appointed interior – this one is in a condition we’ve never seen before and really is usable in every way, right down to the curtains, soft trims to the doors, floors and walls, etc. There are two high bunks should you wish to sleep in the top area, and use the bottom as the living space – all the cupboards are in good condition and the kitchenette with cooker all looks to be in good condition too. There are two small gas bottles under the seats which power the cooker, which we have not tested, but we would suggest that this be checked over by a professional prior to use. There are two tables – one built into to the cupboard, which could also house a portable toilet and/ or fridge and there is also a mobile table attached to the back door for extra dining space. The dash has a range of auxiliary switches and dials, all of which have a function and there is Dormobile lighting that works as it should. All in all, the interior is a really pleasant place to be and very comfortable – we could imagine prepping supper with the lights on, curtains closed and maybe the engine on tick over to add warmth and provide extra power for lights. In the summer months, the awning would function well as an extra space. In summary, we feel this is a very usable vehicle.
The driving experience is really nice and much better than one might imagine… long wheelbase Land Rovers® tend to feel more planted than the short wheelbase, due to the increase in weight. If you then add to this the parabolic springs and the overdrive, this old girl will cruise along in a very civilised and undramatic fashion at 50mph (remember, it was originally designed to cruise at 45mph). One thing that does make a difference as well are the front seats, which are way way more comfortable than standard Series seats and are set back much further due to the fact there is no bulkhead to prevent adjustment – this affords a driving position which is much more roomy and reclined over standard and this really would make a tremendous difference to a long journey. The diesel engine is one of those sowing machine units that you sometimes find. It starts with ease and no smoke, and pulls well through all the gears giving no dramas of any type. The benefits to these diesel units are that, once it is running, it is very unlikely to break down through the lack of points, plugs, electrics, distributors etc. This also makes the diesel engine ideal for road trips of significant lengths and the overdrive keeps things quiet at cruising speeds.
If you are looking for an exceptional Dormobile, this has to be the best on the market in the UK. It is ready to take on holiday immediately with all the family to enjoy the remainder of the summer.
