MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
Unveiled at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, the Ferrari 360 Spider replaced the outgoing 355. Marking a turning point in the Ferrari design ethos, the angular lines and pop-up headlights of previous models were replaced with a more curvaceous Pininfarina-styled body, coining the 360 as the first of the ‘modern’ Ferraris.
With an all-new aluminium space-frame chassis, it was 40% stiffer than its predecessor’s steel-based underpinnings, and around 28% lighter, despite being 10% larger. The Spider versions featured a stronger floor plan than the conventional Modena and a redesigned windscreen frame, stiffer sills and rear bulkhead to compensate for the roof removal. Passengers are protected by two tubular roll bars forming a crash cage and part of the drop-top system. The soft top itself is folded away automatically inside the engine bay.
Visible under the glass cover, the 3. 6 litre (hence 360) V8 engine features a flat-plane crankshaft and titanium connecting rods, and with space limitations due to the soft top storage, it has an additional air supply through large side air intakes. It develops 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp) and is capable of propelling the 360 Spider to 60 mph in a mere 4. 3 seconds, continuing to a top speed of 180 mph. It was available with 6-speed manual transmission, or an F1 style automated manual.
The interior is finished in leather throughout, with aluminium used on the centre console and lower door panels as the complimenting accent material. The rear shelf has sufficient space for a set of golf clubs while still providing adequate space for seating in front.
With production running from 2000-2004, a total of 7, 565 360 Spiders were produced, before being replaced by the F430 with its launch at the 2004 Paris Motor Show.
