Description

At first glance, you might think this 1932 Ford Model 18 is not our typical offering.

However, read on to discover its fascinating history.
This vehicle was originally owned by Eric Fernihough, a motorcycle world speed record holder, who retained it until his tragic death on April 23, 1938. Fernihough, then 33, lost control of his Brough-Superior motorcycle and was thrown into a ditch on the side of the new road to Istanbul, south of Budapest. That same year, the car was purchased from Atalanta Motors by Eric Thompson and his brother. They competed in several prestigious events, including the MCC Exeter Trial, the Wye Cup Trial, and the Lands End Trial, where they obtained a premier award. Additionally, they achieved a second-place award at the Brooklands Ford Gymkhana.
In 1963-64, the car became one of the country’s first hot rods under the care of Brian Hardy of Sheffield. After the original engine suffered a failure, a flathead Mercury V8 was fitted, complete with Ardun OHV heads and eight Amal carburettors.

By 1984, the car was with Ford enthusiast Dave Palmer in Dorset, known for his hot rod creations. He transferred the original registration, APJ35, to another vehicle.

In 1994, the car was acquired by Sid Shepard of Chichester, who completed a full restoration over four years. He fitted a correct model Ford V8 engine and re-registered the vehicle as GY371, the same number featured on the cover of the September 13, 1935, issue of The Motor magazine—essentially an advertisement from the Ford Motor Company.

Post-restoration, the car has won various class and best-in-show awards at Ford rallies. A subsequent owner installed a mechanical overdrive and electronic ignition. Since then, it has had four additional owners who have used it for tours and rallies throughout Europe.

Today, this 1932 Ford Model 18 is in excellent condition. While it may not be as concours-ready as it once was, it remains a very usable and easy-to-drive vehicle, perfect for road trips and adventures, enhanced by the overdrive gearbox.

This is more than just a car; it’s a piece of automotive history with a storied past and a promising future on the open road. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to own a classic that stands out not only for its heritage but also for its enduring charm and reliability.
