Description
It is 1993 when Porsche presents the new 911 at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, internally referred to as 993. For the first time, major changes have been made to the body, with the headlights lying flatter and more integrated into the design. The rear is also rounder and smoother. What the world does not yet know is that this series will enter the books as the last air-cooled 911. This makes it not only one of the most beautiful 911s but also the last chapter of an icon.
The 993 is quite a step up from the 964 in every way. Options are more modern and with a new alloy subframe and new rear suspension better handling than ever. The interior gets only marginal innovations, fortunately. The characteristic five meters are therefore retained in the classic way. The engine is an evolution of the 3. 6 that could already be found in the predecessor.
As with its predecessor, you can choose a manual variant or the now well-known Tiptronic transmission. An automatic transmission that can also be operated manually with touch keys (or the gear lever).
However, the car we offer here is the version where you have full control over the gear change, this 993 has the manual gearbox. Executed in Arctic Silver with black leather, which means that we are dealing with one of the most popular colour combinations. Perhaps not exactly the most exciting, but one with which you can arrive anywhere.
The body of the convertible is neat, with some small signs of wear here and there. The fits are neat, the paintwork has a single imperfection. Even after almost 30 years, the 993 still looks like a modern car, great design work by Porsche.
Once behind the wheel, it’s fun all the way through. In front of you the characteristic clock shop of a classic 911: five meters next to each other with, of course, the tachometer centrally present. The steering wheel is comfortable to hold, as is the relatively low-positioned gear knob. Furthermore, the interior is fairly sober, as you would expect from a Porsche 911 from the 1980s and 1990s. And all this can be observed from great-fitting sports seats with very good lateral support.
The powerful 3. 6 is good for 272 hp, more than enough to be labelled as a real sports car. With the hefty load of power, the butt of the 993 pushes down on the throttle to see the nose rocket towards the horizon. The technology is in a very healthy condition, the chassis and the brakes feel perfectly healthy.
You sometimes hear people say: ‘My mind says this, but my feeling says that.’ How nice it is to be able to say that feeling and reason can rarely agree so wholeheartedly when it comes to a Porsche 993: do it!
