As British as a London black cab or a cream tea, roadsters built in Morgan’s Malvern factory have a charm and character all of their own.
The original Plus 4 was introduced in 1950 and was hand-built in small numbers until 1969, before the model was discontinued. The Plus 4 name remained moribund until 1985, when production began again, before being halted in 2000. Five years later, the model was revived once more, production continuing until a new model replaced it in 2020. Over its patchy production life, 4, 584 Plus 4s were produced in total, with a variety of different four-cylinder engines and transmissions, as the years progressed.
The car:
This 2017 Plus 4 was the Morgan factory’s press car, used for all their promotional activities and even the October page in the factory calendar. One of just two cars painted in Bugatti Blue, it’s as distinctive as it is characterful, with Black Pack wire wheels and grille.
As a factory press car it has almost every conceivable extra, from a factory-fitted radio and aerial to Union Jack hood badges, rear valance, rear luggage rack and Morgan suitcase, including a new rain cover.
The black leather interior features sports seats with lumbar support and embossed headrests. The sun visors are also in black leather while the dash is blue and there is footwell lighting, a black mohair hood, with cover (and the bag for storing the side windows), bonnet strap, moto kits steering wheel, wheel-centre spinners, paint protection, cross member chrome plates and a Le Mans fuel cap.
The car was purchased from the factory by a Morgan enthusiast and has lived in a purpose-built building just two miles from its place of birth. It has always been serviced by the factory and has never been driven in the wet. The present (second) owner has contributed just 3, 000 of its current 25, 000 miles and is reluctantly parting with the car because it simply deserves to be used more.
The car was most recently serviced by the Morgan factory in April 2024, including a brake fluid change and comes with a fresh MOT with no advisories. Along with its full service history is a hardback photobook, collating much of the Morgan promotional material featuring this very special Plus 4.
