EXTERIOR
Presented in arguably the best colour for a Eunos Roadster, Montego blue metallic (also to be found on the RS model) that reflects a stunning blue/ green hue in the sunlight. Following a recent machine polish, the paintwork is bright and deeply glossy with no off-colour panels. The blue Mohair hood is in excellent condition with no damage to report. The headlights have been replaced with Wipac polycarbonate headlights with a halogen H4 conversion (far brighter than the original sealed beam units). The often cracked, mouldy side lights have also recently been replaced with brand new Mazda units.
Bodywork/ underside are exceptional with no rust anywhere - sills, wheels arches, wings etc are all rust-free and in excellent condition. Importantly, its never been welded underneath and is in incredibly original, sound condition. All of the original spot welds and seams are intact and again, it's rare to see an MX-5 Mk1 in this kind of condition. Its had some underside treatment (to the most vulnerable bits) with Dynax S50.
INTERIOR
The interior space is very original and period correct with the S-Special (type II) Momo steering wheel, Nardi gear knob, chrome speaker covers and Roadster sill plates. A very rare find is the original Japanese Panasonic stereo system, a pleasing sight as opposed to the garish, flashy cd players it is often replaced with. Another rare JDM option is the Roadster style bar with leatherette cover, a tasteful addition to any Eunos Roadster.
The optional air conditioning is working as it should, blowing ice-cold. Behind the driver’s seat is a genuine Eunos storage bag and in the footwells, the correct S-Special over-mats are still in place.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The mechanical specification of this car is very good, as its one of the later 'Type II' cars (1. 8, 134bhp), this means it has a lightened flywheel, later improved 16-bit ECU, a later Torsen2 limited slip differential with shorter ratios (for better acceleration) along with extra underbody bracing. There are no oil/ water leaks and engine, gearbox, diff and brakes are spot on. It has recently had a major service which included new cam belt (the cam belt and water pump were also last replaced in 2017) along with new auxiliary belts, a replacement Cam Sensor 'O' ring seal, ignition timing re-set, new oil, filters etc. A Japanese supplied HKS Superflow induction kit has been fitted, although the original system still comes with the car.
A set of Miester coilovers (height-adjustable) have recently been fitted, vastly improving the handling and ride quality over the usual tired Bilstein shocks.
HISTORY
The Eunos Roadster was first registered in April 1997, where it spent the next 20 years of its life on the salt-free roads of Japan. Since then it has covered a total of 83k miles. It was imported to the UK in Feb 2017 by MX-5 specialist Steve Bloxham (Goodwood Sports Cars). It was then sold to its first private UK owner in 2017. Knowing how exceptional this example was, Steve then bought it back in 2021 adding it to his own personal car collection.
Within the history file you will find various invoices for parts, export certificate, MOT certificates, Mazda owners manual, Japanese booklet, Eunos brochures, V5C, Spare key.
It's becoming increasingly difficult to find a Eunos in this original/ solid condition. The value of these are now mainly determined by the condition of the bodywork. The vast majority having rusted out and repaired to varying degrees of quality. This is an exceptionally original example that will only increase in value as the prices of Mk1s are now on the rise.
