Often regarded as the first of the 'neoclassic' marques, Excalibur began as a design exercise for Studebaker. With lines by Brooks Stevens harkening back to pre-war Mercedes, a Studebaker Lark chassis, and a 289ci V8, the Excalibur show car created quite a sensation upon its debut. While Studebaker elected to pass on the car in order to focus on the Avanti, Stevens was able to secure engines from Chevrolet and enough orders to start a company of his own based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Largely hand-built, the initial Excaliburs were made-to-order to impressively high standards using Studebaker chassis with Corvette V8s. This resulted in an MSRP over double that of a contemporary Cadillac, which certainly didn't help sales. Even still, there were plenty of buyers, many of whom were celebrities, who were excited to add an Excalibur to their collection. Some of the many notable personalities to own one include: Steve McQueen, Bill Cosby, Frank Sinatra, Dick Van Dyke, Tony Curtis, Sonny & Cher, Dean Martin, and Jackie Gleason. Nowadays, these cars are often heralded for the same traits that made them popular when they were new: timeless design paired with American muscle.

The stunning 1968 Excalibur SS Series 1 Roadster featured here is finished in striking Dark Red and Black with a stunning Red interior and Black removable convertible top. This exquisite motorcar was recently released from a prominent collection and is now ready for its next caretaker. With only 37 produced in 1968 of which only 19 are known to remain, this Excalibur is the perfect, investment-grade classic to add to any premier collection. We are proud to offer this incredible Excalibur to the most particular collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own one of the very best at an investment price.
