Description

The TR sports range was introduced in 1953 with the model ‘2’ popular both on and off track, it could rally, sprint and compete in the endurance arena and when the improved TR3 arrived in late 1955 the trend continued. Visually the new model differed little from its predecessor, inserting an ‘egg-crate’ front grille the most noticeable change but behind sat a more powerful motor curtesy of cylinder head and carb alterations. Disc brakes on the front wheels made the ‘3’ the first British production car to feature this important option. 1957 saw a styling update for what became known as the TR3A; another front grille appeared, this time full width and door handles on the outside of the car. The ‘3A’ continued in production until 1962 and sold very well in the American market where a short lived TR3B was offered later the same year with a 2138cc motor that would be fitted to the incoming TR4.
This TR3A left Coventry in December 1957 bound for North America, finished in Pearl White, disc wheels and sporting LHD. No doubt it enjoyed life in a dry state or spent most of its life under cover because on returning to the UK in 1997 images show both chassis and shell in solid condition. The body off restoration is documented with images plus dozens of invoices (mainly from Moss London) including engine, drive train and interior parts totalling thousands of pounds. The power unit was also improved to TR3B/ TR4 spec 2138cc whilst the gearbox features overdrive in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Having spent much of its life Stateside, since 1997 this TR3a has benefited from custodians in Hertfordshire, the Isle of Wight and Sussex, the latter choosing Country Classic Cars for the maintenance over recent years. Since 2022 we have overhauled the twin SU carbs, replaced leaf springs, water hoses, tyres and starter motor. Both gearbox and overdrive were removed and subject to specialist rebuild a new clutch fitted and the flywheel was lightened. An oil leak resulted in the crank being removed, modified and refitted with a fresh rear main oil seal and service work carried out.
This Triumph is being offered on behalf of the current owner and at Country Classic Cars we find its best to present a ‘warts and all’ detailed write up of any classic we are requested to sell. This helps to avoid ‘buyer’s remorse’ especially for those purchasing from abroad or interested parties travelling distances to view. Visually there is little to fault and although this is an older restoration it presents to show standard and requires little more than some time with a wax polish. We noted the n/ s rear light rubber is showing its age (an easy fix) and a tiny crack in the paint surface where the bonnet securing pin locates. Black leather dominates the interior and offers minimal signs of wear as do the carpets whilst the dash is crack-free and all the dials and gauges operated correctly when tested. The chrome spoked rims are a later addition as is the wood rimmed ‘Motolita’ steering wheel, the wind deflectors and fire extinguisher.
On the move this TR performs surprisingly well, the phrase ‘spritely’ could never be more apt. Instant start and superb oil pressure, the clutch is firm but certainly not heavy and the gear shifts impress; synchro offers precise engagement with a short throw. The larger motor picks up quickly and offers plenty of performance without the need for high revs and having driven several TR’s I would suggest this is definitely the most enthusiastic. Even for a six footer there is ample leg room and the steering doesn’t require assistance, it is exact and free from play whilst the suspension is compliant it’s not harsh. The overall driving experience confirms money has been spent in the right areas, a fully sorted classic sportster that retains the fun factor this design presented 70 years ago.
Included with this TR3a is an excellent hood, hood bag and side screens plus MOT certificates from 1997, large file of invoices, restoration images, heritage certificate and original Triumph service manual.
