Country Classic Cars are pleased to offer, on consignment this three owner R129 Mercedes 300SL, a classic we have looked after for several years and is back with us in search of a new custodian. With its silky smooth straight six, offering 190bhp via a seamless four speed auto gearbox and fully loaded interior, it has become the modern classic of choice for those who understand the market. The model enjoyed world-wide success with its (at the time) ground-breaking safety features including the automatic extending roll-over bar with ABS and airbag technology. The legendary hydraulic convertible roof opening mechanism presents the owner with three options; luxury open air travel with the soft top down or at the press of a button 16 seconds and the hood is up, occupants sealed from the elements and finally the car was supplied with a clip-on hard top roof, ideal for winter use.
Registered April 1993 and has travelled 99, 430 miles although it has covered less than 10k miles in the past 10 years having limited use whilst being stored by a local collector. In that time, it has benefitted from a new roof ECU/ control mechanism in August 2018, invoices include a full service and new crankshaft sensor in December 2015 plus o/ s window motor the year previously when the mileage was recorded at 91, 222. This SL has resided in Sussex since the late 90s and was service by ourselves at 92470 then again last year at 95735; at this time four new tyres and a replacement battery were fitted. Prior to sale the car will receive a comprehensive pre-sales check plus valet and fresh MOT.
At Country Classic Cars we find it’s best to present a detailed write up of any classic we are requested to sell, presenting both the good and bad aspects which can only be achieved after a full inspection. This helps to avoid ‘buyer’s remorse’ especially for those purchasing from abroad or interested parties travelling distances to view. Finished in the desirable Periblau Met on blue finish with ‘Sand’ interior there is little question of the build quality enjoyed by the SL range and this example presents well with perfect carpets, unblemished leather throughout. The original Blaupunkt audio has been updated to their latest 400 series unit and the old unit is included with the car. The exterior shows straight clean panels and bright paint but we did note a small chip to the base of the drivers door, we suspect the cause being the seatbeat buckle. Slight kerb mark to the o/ s front alloy whilst the ramp inspection confirmed a clean bill of health underneath, as we would expect from a Mercedes R129. Equipment includes electric windows, mirrors and powered seats (with heating option) plus central locking; our initial inspection did reveal an issue with the cruise control system which failed to operate.
This Mercedes drives as any knowledgeable enthusiast would expect, minus unwanted vibrations or noises and offering a luxury cruise with the potential to ‘make rapid progress’ with the slightest of encouragement from the right foot. Gauges confirmed correct oil pressure and under the bonnet presents well, all original with no evidence of panel repair or fluid leaks from the straight six. The history file enjoys previous MOT certificates, old invoices plus the Mercedes dealer pack with original service book, owners manuals for both the car and audio systems.
