Description
With its monocoque body, four-wheel brakes, independent front suspension and V4 overhead camshaft engine many enthusiasts view the Lancia Lambda as one of the great automobiles of all time. With a conventional pedal layout and H-pattern gear selection the Lambda also set the automotive template for years to come.
The Lambda was also successful in competition with privately entered cars finishing fourth and fifth behind the works OMs in the first Mille Miglia of 1927.
The Lambda was continually developed through nine series of cars with the 8th and 9th series receiving a larger 2570cc engine and four-speed gearbox.
Chassis 20352 is an 8th series original short-chassis Lambda supplied new to England and fitted from new with a two-seat drophead fabric-over-ash-frame lightweight body with dickey seat by Albany Carriage Company of Kensington, London.
An article from the February 1992 edition of The Automobile magazine describes how the car was discovered in Northampton, UK in complete, unrestored condition and still retaining its original fabric body. Even the original wicker bucket seats with largely original leather survived in situ.
According to The Automobile article, the Lambda had been converted to steam engine power in the 1950’s and was later purchased by a steam car enthusiast for its engine. The steam engine was removed and car itself was placed into storage for many years, which is probably how it survived intact.
In 1992 the Lambda was purchased by the father of the current owner, his father being a noted Italian collector and major force in the ASI. He then commissioned UK restorers Wilkinsons to restore the Lambda. The restoration took a number of years and during the restoration a correct specification 8th series engine was acquired and installed. Fortunately original coachbuilder’s photographs survive and were used for reference.
Following the passing of its late owner the Lambda is now offered for sale on behalf of the family.
Few Lambdas were fitted with English coachwork and consequently this example is an extremely rare survivor and is particularly desirable in short-chassis, roadster form.
Today, Lambdas enjoy a thriving community of owners and are an entry ticket into some of the most prestigious events around the world. Since its restoration this example has been used sparingly and remains in excellent condition, on the button and ready to be enjoyed once more.
