Description
This stunningly beautiful, rare and matching numbers 1956 RHD Jaguar XK140 SE Fixed Head Coupe has chassis no. S804675DN and some details can be found on the xkdata. com site. The car has been in Southern Africa for all of its life. It was imported to Rhodesia in 1956 and the first owner was a Mr. Harold G. Stay from Southern Rhodesia. He and his wife had visited the Salisbury Motor Show in 1956 and his wife liked the car so much that he gave it to her as a birthday present! Mr. Stay was one of the Quality Surveyors of Kariba Dam. However, Mrs. Stay didn't like the colour and had it changed to white and baptised it "Flossie", a name that has stuck with the car ever since. Mr. Stay moved to Sasolburg in South Africa and then to Johannesburg, where the care was stored on blocks for quite a few years. The second owner was John Meeks of Johannesburg who put the car back on the road in the late 1970's. He had the car repainted Dark Red, ran it for 12 years and he and his wife used the car every day. He raced the car in many post '45 Regularity Rallies throughout South Africa, including Cape Natal Orange Free State Provinces. In the early 1990’s John sold the car to his son's partner, Mike Romanoff also from Johannesburg. He had the car restored and painted again to the present dark blue. Mike Romanoff sold the car to Derek Corn in Kimberly in 2004, but Mr. Corn hardly made any use of the car and, in late 2007, he took Flossie to Norman Frost in Knysna. It is there that Bernie Neser saw and bought Flossie in late 2007 and currently owns her. With the exception of Mr. Stay and Mike Romanoff, Bernie came to know all of the previous owners and has many stories from them about the car! Apart from the colour changes, Flossie is still very original and in excellent condition. A Kenlow Fan and electronic ignition have been added, as have mirrors to the wings. Bernie had the engine rebuilt in 2020 and the brakes have recently been checked. He also has many invoices and a Jaguar Heritage Certificate for the car, which is still on it’s original steel wheels with spats and has the most lovely sound from the exhaust. One thing about Flossie is unique - and that is the rear view mirror which is from Lufft of Stuttgart and shows altitude in feet and temperature in Fahrenheit - and the indications are still very accurate! This mirror is clearly from the 1950's and must have been installed either at production time or only little later. Sylvan Garage (t/ a Jeff’s Jags) is based in Johannesburg South Africa and our "Jaguar Exchange" has a selection of classic Jaguar Cars on display here.
