As with the transition from the 365 GT4 2+2 to the 400 GT, the striking bodywork designed by Pininfarina had only been changed in details - the 412 was characterised by a higher boot, bumpers in body colour, modified alloy wheels and exposed fog lights. The 412 was delivered with ABS and a 3-speed automatic transmission as standard; a 5-speed manual gearbox was available as an option.
