Introduction
'The most beautiful car ever made!'
Enzo Ferrari
Quoted thousands of times already, but these words of Enzo Ferrari when he gazed upon the E-Type are now perhaps more topical than ever, as Brooks Classics proudly presents this early E-Type with chassis number 243
History
This particularly handsome "outside bonnet latch" E-Type was built on 18 July 1961, making it one of the early left-hand drive E-type roadsters constructed in the early months of Jaguar's E-type production.
This is the car with chassis number #243
The E-type is finished in the correct and original colours Gunmetal Grey with a red leather interior and a black hood.
Obviously, #243matching numbers: the chassis number (stamped in the front frame), engine number, gearbox and number on the head are all correct.
The unique body number is located on the bulkhead on these earliest E-Types, unlike other E-types where it is located in the boot.
About this car
This car has unique features, seen only on early production cars: the interior has the correct high-backed seats,
the crossbar without recess, the correct dashboard with the unusual round ashtray, typical of these early cars.
The chrome work on the top of the doors and around the windscreen is correct.
Furthermore, #243 is equipped with the rare fuel gauge without the 3/ 4 fill mark and both the bonnet latches and welded louvers are correct for this period.
Driving
Driving an early Jaguar E-Type will always remain a magical, almost ecstatic experience.
Even by today's standards, a good E-Type is blisteringly fast and extremely tractable.
It is almost inconceivable that a car from 1961 could offer such a combination of agility, speed and manoeuvrability.
The particularly attractive colour combination "Gunmetal Grey" with red leather makes the most of the E-Type's already fantastic lines.
