Description
An exceptionally nice example of the 500 SL, the flagship and most desirable version of the much-revered W107 series of Mercedes sports car in production from 1971 until 1989 and deservedly popular throughout this period and beyond.
Finished in Classic White with optional dark blue leather interior and featuring the factory options of rear seat, heated seats and Blaupunkt stereo, the SL has covered 47, 000 miles in the hands of seven careful owners and has a full and comprehensive maintenance history from new.
It was supplied from new by Alan Day Limited, the long established Mercedes main dealer for North London to a Mr Painter of Wimbledon on 15 August 1985 following the pre-delivery inspection on 10 August. The latter is confirmed with a stamp in the original service book and original PDI sheet on file.
Mr Painter retained the car for the next three years and 12, 000 miles, during this time it was serviced as per schedule by Mercedes Benz Great Western Road, London as confirmed by service stamps.
In August 1988 the SL became a resident of Scotland where it remained until 2022. During this period it was owned by five enthusiasts all of whom looked after the car very carefully as indicated by its current great original condition and by the regular and extensive maintenance completed and detailed in invoicing on file by Mercedes dealers and specialists.
In 2022 the Mercedes arrived at specialists The SL Shop in Stratford Upon Avon for maintenance work and subsequently for sale. It was purchased in May of 2022 by the last owner, a regular Hairpin customer and a collector who has only the finest examples in his collection. He was impressed as we are by the fine original condition of the SL in all respects and detail, as I have said many times before, these original low mileage, well maintained cars drive with an integrity and ‘rightness’ that even the best restorations cannot emulate and this car is no exception.
The car comes with the SL Shop three-year bulkhead integrity warranty, this being one of the rare weak points of this model in lesser examples, in addition the underside has been ice blasted and any areas requiring attention addressed as detailed in invoicing on file. Photographs on file show the car to be virtually as new underneath, impressive after nearly forty years even for a brand known for the highest standards of construction.
This is exactly the 500 SL you hope to find, a nice specification, low mileage, in exceptionally good original order with a full history and ready to use. It comes with the above-mentioned complete history file, original book pack including stamped service book in the original wallet, all keys, tools and a hard top stand. Finally, a period correct Blaupunkt stereo has been fitted with modern internals allowing for DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity.
