Description

1932 VAUXHALL T-TYPE “SILENT 80” RICHMOND SALOON
CHASSIS NO : T2373 ENGINE NO : 356177

Believed to have originally served as a British consular car in Phoenix Arizona, whilst retaining right-hand drive steering, this spectacular Vauxhall eventually came to Australia from the USA in 1991.

Factory records confirm that in 1931-32, just 198 T-80 Vauxhalls were produced across six model options – including the improved ‘Silent 80’ Richmond saloon variant on 123” wheelbase.

This spectacular ‘Silent 80’ is understood to be the only example extant in Australia and likely one of just three survivors world-wide.

Catalogued ‘Silent’, a number of innovations were promoted – among them, rubber engine mounts, quieter cooling fan, reduced carburetor induction noise and a new gearbox design to greatly reduce gear noise via a silent final drive.

Vauxhall, first built in Luton, Bedfordshire, England in 1903 achieved iconic luxury brand status on a par with Rolls Royce and Bentley – the great Edwardian Prince Henry Vauxhall models are highly prized along with the fabulous sporting E-type and OE-type 30/ 98 built between 1913 and 1927.

In 1925, Vauxhall was acquired by General Motors which saw its target market move away from lightweight sports tourers towards a range of more sedate saloon and touring styles.

Retaining the characteristic fluted bonnet, a Vauxhall feature since 1905, the 1932 ‘Silent 80’ with 3. 3 litre 6-cylinder engine motored at a comfortable 70mph delivering 19. 1 mph per 1, 000rpm in top gear.

This spectacular 1932 ‘Silent 80’ Richmond luxury saloon is impressive with many a detailed concession to style, comfort and refinement. Its sumptuous interior boasts plush headlining, recessed armrests, classic silken window blinds, ample deep-carpeted foot room and storage space, magnificent leather seating, abundant vision and an ample sunroof. A true expression of unbridled luxury coachwork of a bygone era, this regal automobile exudes style and grace.

No less impressive is the exterior. Be it the rare ‘Speedbird’ art-deco radiator mascot, plated headlamps, period radiator design, bonnet flutes, correct Firestone white-wall tyres on 20-inch wire wheels, this is no ordinary luxury carriage.

Finished in a deep navy blue – an original catalogue colour option – with complementary blue coach-line and black upper body, this rare and handsome, automobile immediately draws attention.

For that dramatic grand entrance, memorable wedding conveyance, period film prop or vintage concours event, this rare, collectable and all-original saloon offers a unique opportunity to experience five-star motoring from days past.
