Description
White paint, dark blue leather interior, the most powerful engine, exceptionally good condition, and of course, that magical letter ‘SL.’ Now, taste is entirely subjective, but we do believe we are dealing with the perfect package here.
Let us take you back to the origins of the R107. Following the iconic SL W113, better known as the Pagoda, was no easy task. However, Mercedes-Benz managed to accomplish it with the R107 SL, when it hit the market in 1971. They achieved a remarkable feat, as the R107 SL became one of the longest-running model series, with a production span of 18 years and over 237, 000 units built. The SL’s tremendous success is well-deserved, as it was simply one of the best cars money could buy at that time. The R107, with ‘R’ standing for Roadster, was also crucial for the American market, so it was equipped with various luxury options to satisfy the customers. And satisfy them, it did.
Satisfying the owners of this 500 SL must have been more than successful. The fresh white paint with the dark blue interior was a very beloved combination and remains highly sought after, especially in a time where white features as the most popular car colours. Additionally, the power plant in this SL is anything but basic; it boasts the evocative 500-version, the top-of-the-line model. With 240 horsepower, the 500 is the most powerful variant available, and its beautifully arranged V8 engine produces a stunning sound, delivering 402 Nm of torque and ample power at all times. Smooth, strong, stately, and spirited, in short, it’s an all-rounder.
The bodywork on this European-delivered 500 SL is exceptionally neat with outstanding paintwork. The paint thickness meter indicates professional application, without any visible signs of subpar work or excessive filler. The interior sides of doors and bumpers still have retained their original paint, suggesting a lack of significant accident history. The overall appearance is flawless, especially when paired with the alloy wheels. All trims, rubbers, and details are in the condition you would expect from looking at the photos. Everything about this car looks exceptionally fresh.
The interior is likewise exceptionally beautiful and well-maintained. The blue leather is in a very healthy state, and the same goes for everything around you once you’ve taken a seat in this well-equipped R107. The dashboard, door panels, carpets, and everything else are in top-notch condition. The blue carpets are undamaged, still soft to the touch, and boast a deep colour. The dashboard and centre console, also in blue, are in excellent condition too. The wooden accents beautifully complement the blue interior, completing the very pleasing picture. We’ve mainly focused on aesthetics, but rest assured that everything functions perfectly as well.
The mechanical aspects are in equally great condition, and we’re aware that it almost sounds repetitive. The smooth V8 engine runs beautifully and silkily, which is no surprise considering it has only covered 95, 040 kilometres and has been meticulously maintained. This SL provides a lot of trouble-free pleasure, that’s for sure. The automatic gearbox works seamlessly, with extremely smooth gear shifts. With 240 horsepower, the eight-cylinder engine offers plenty of power, ensuring performance and driving characteristics that you will not get enough of.
This is genuinely a touring car that provides unparalleled enjoyment during long distances on the motorway, but also allows you to clock up countless fantastic kilometres on country roads, whether with the top down or not. Naturally, the undercarriage is just as immaculate as the rest of the car, free from any visible rust, thanks to the careful usage of the car, limited to the summer months.
This R107 has been cherished and very well-maintained, adorned with a beautiful colour combination and the most powerful engine. This is one SL that you cannot afford to miss!
