A very rare car indeed, ideal for collectors
This is in fact not a 'simple' SLC, but a 450 5. 0 that was at the top of the range.
Presented in 1977, this version was built for competition homologation.
The 450 SLC 5. 0 was characterised by two small black plastic front and rear spoilers and aluminium bonnets and bumper reinforcements, while the engine delivered an impressive 240 hp.
This special version was built in a production run of around 1, 600 units.
The 450 SLC 5. 0 rediscovered itself as a rally car with an innate aptitude for the toughest and most demanding races, which, thanks to its robustness and respectable performance, enabled the car to achieve important results.
The famous 'Vuelta a la America del Sud' of 1978, where Mercedes, with four official 450 SLC 5. 0 coupés and two 280 E saloons, won the first four places, annihilating the opposing teams with significant gaps, is a memorable event for the most enthusiasts.
In the same year, again in a 450 SLC 5. 0, the great Hannu Mikkola finished second in the East African Safari after holding the lead for a long time.
