Description

1938 Delahaye 135 CS Replica: EXF42 - A Racing Icon Reborn.

EXF42 is a masterfully crafted replica of the legendary 1938 Delahaye 135 CS, a model renowned for its racing prowess and its notable victory at the 1938 24 Hours of Le Mans. This car's story is one of transformation and dedication, capturing the essence of a classic that epitomized pre-war French automotive engineering and motorsport excellence.

Provenance and Transformation
Ordered from the Paris factory as a 135 MS rolling chassis, the first owner had a saloon body fitted by the Carlton Carriage Company in London, and in 1938 the car was registered EXF 42. In 1974, a mere 36 years later, the car was discovered on a farm in mid Wales, but unfortunately the Carlton bodywork had not stood the test of time and was deemed unrestorable. The Delahaye rolling chassis however remained in good condition, and Walter Fox & Partners of Sheffield began the transformation into the revered Compétition Spéciale specification. Critical components such as the advanced independent front suspension and the powerful straight six 3. 6-litre engine, which had been upgraded in 1939, were all retained.

Sir Ralph Robins, the former Chairman of Rolls Royce, became the proud owner of EXF42 shortly after its transformation. Under his stewardship, the car received new coachwork in 1984, with the chassis shortened and lightened to match the original CS specifications, and a gas-flowed aluminium competition cylinder head with hardened valve seats was fitted. Sir Ralph actively and successfully competed in numerous VSCC events, including races, sprints and hill climbs. During his ownership he entrusted the vehicle to Ronin Engineering of Derby for maintenance and performance enhancements, documented in detailed invoices that accompany the sale.
Recent Enhancements and Current Specifications

The current custodian, continuing the legacy of meticulous care and enhancement, has invested significantly in restoring EXF42 to its precise period-correct specifications. With the expertise of marque specialist Ross Keeling, significant works were undertaken, including:

• Narrowing the rear axle to original CS specifications, and fitment of competition half shafts.
• Replacing the hydraulic braking system with the correct original cable braking system, allowing the car to compete in the VSCC standard class.
• Rebuilding the Cotal gearbox in 2019, ensuring smooth and reliable shifting.
• Complete new cloth covered wiring harness
• Period correct triple Solex side-draught carburettors

EXF42, while not one of the original 17 Delahaye 135 CS models (of which only 7 remain), is an authentic recreation that adheres strictly to the original specifications.

As it is based on an original 1938 135 MS rolling chassis, it is eligible to run as such. (Some replicas available have been based on 1948 fire engines!)

It comes with current FIA papers, making it eligible for prestigious events worldwide. FIVA papers can also be arranged with our assistance.

Driving Experience
Behind the wheel, EXF42 offers a driving experience that is both exhilarating and refined. The 3557cc six-cylinder engine, equipped with three Solex carburettors, delivers robust power that is impressive even by modern standards. Cruising at 60 MPH with the engine running at just 1700 rpm, the car is capable of reaching speeds up to 120 mph. The brakes are highly effective, providing confident stopping power. The oil pressure remains a healthy 60 psi under normal driving conditions.

The remarkable Cotal gearbox is a joy to use. It offers a seamless and effortless shifting experience, the equivalent of a 1930s tiptronic system. The car's electrical systems are reliable, with strong charging and functional turn signals. Weather protection is provided by a 50/ 50 tonneau cover, and the tail compartment includes space for the spare wheel, tools, and luggage.

Conclusion
EXF42 is not just a car; it is a tribute to a bygone era of motorsport glory. Its storied past, combined with painstaking restoration and enhancements, makes it a unique and valuable piece of automotive history. Whether for competitive events or as a centerpiece in a prestigious collection, this 1938 Delahaye 135 CS replica stands ready to continue its legacy of excellence.
