EXTERIOR
A prime example of 90s excess, this rare V12 CL in desirable facelift specification presents handsomely in lustrous Green Black metallic, a majestic Mercedes colour that appears either very dark blue or green depending on the light. A perfect contrast against the cream interior, the paintwork has a deep shine following a machine polish by our in-house detailer. The Xenon headlights are perfectly clear and free from moisture ingress, and she’s nice and straight along both sides. Aside from a couple of paint imperfections at the front end it’s an impressive example that wouldn’t require a lot to make perfect.
INTERIOR
The lavishly appointed cabin is bright and airy, even more so with the glass sunroof. The heated and electrically adjustable multi-contour seats are upholstered in exclusive two-tone Mushroom Nappa leather. Pleasingly there are few signs of wear to be found, even to commonly worn areas such as the driver’s bolster. The interior is lifted further with lashings of glossy burr walnut trim, all still impeccably presented with no scratches or lacquer damage to report, including to the steering wheel and gearshift. The fit and finish in this example remains to a very high standard, exactly as you’d expect for a Mercedes of this era. The carpets are well protected with deep pile lambswool overmats for a truly luxurious feel underfoot.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The driving force of the CL600 is the venerable M120 V12 that produces a mighty 389hp and 420 ft-lb of torque at just 3, 800rpm. The 5-speed automatic transmission is a perfect accompaniment, handling the engine’s power effortlessly with almost undetectable gear changes. Lifting the bonnet reveals a very nicely presented engine bay. The last service was carried out by a well-regarded Mercedes specialist (Merc-Care Ltd.) in August 2022 less than 200 miles ago. For the new keeper’s peace of mind the CL has just returned from a from full inspection and vehicle health check by our trusted classic car workshop.
WHEELS, TYRES AND BRAKES
Filling the arches are the original 18-inch Eltanin alloy wheels, all in excellent condition with a striking polished lip and zero kerb marks to report. They are wrapped in recently fitted Pirelli PZero tyres all round with at least 7mm of tread left at each corner. The brakes have also been checked over and remain in fine operational condition, most recently benefitting from a full overhaul of the front calipers at the current mileage.
HISTORY FILE
Leaving the factory in late 1997 this magnificent V12 Mercedes was first registered in January 1998.
