Description
Since its inception, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL was meant to be replaced for matching sportscar styling to conventional sedan 100 bhp performance. Under Mercedes-Benz technical director Fritz Nallinger and chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the 190SL’s successor was to be completely redesigned into a well-rounded sportscar. Paul Bracq’s design of a pagoda-roofed, tall-windowed greenhouse cabin over a sleek contoured square body established the w113 as one of the most iconic shapes in automotive history. Power was addressed by an enlarged to 2. 3lt version of the M127 2. 2lt 6-cylinder unit under a revised cylider head of modified camshaft and larger valves to a total output of 150 bhp and 196 Nm. Weight was reduced via aluminium engine lid, trunk lid and door skins providing a formidable for the era power to weight ratio. Sportcar handling was achieved via using a shortened by 30cm w111 platform, a double wishbone front and single joint pivot swinging rear suspension as well as disc brakes at the front with power-assisted drums at the rear. Performance was delivered via recirculating ball steering with optional power assistance and 4-speed manual shifting with optional 5-speed via ZF’s SF-20 gearbox. Notably, upon the w113’s unveiling in 1963, MB chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut lapped the Vetraz-Monthoux in a 230 SL only 0. 2 s slower than professional race car driver Mike Parkes in his Ferrari 250 GT.
The w113 230 SL offered was produced in September of 1964 for the European market to feature a series of exclusive options including a 4-piece trunk set, rear ‘booster’ seat, power steering and a hardtop. Once Mercedes-Benz offered the ZF SF-20 option, shifting was upgraded by an authorized dealer to a 5-speed manual. Decades later the 230 SL was cosmetically restored in Mercedes-Benz signature Silver Grey Metallic with Navy Blue softop over Medium Blue leather and Blue carpet interior. Always maintained, it is now offered with recent full engine service including rear differential oil change, new set of Michelin MXV tires as well as full body detailing including ceramic coating treatment for MB local events.
