Description

In 1960 Alfa Romeo's 2000 Sprint was unveiled as a 2+2 Coupe version of the Tipo 102 series. Its design was based on Franco Scaglione’s 1954 Giulietta Sprint and developed by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his early days as head of design at Carrozzeria Bertone. Its engine was a 2. 0 lt version of the 1900’s in-line, 4-cylinder DOHC with dual side draft carburation and 8. 5 to 1 compression ratio. The 115 bhp and 152 Nm would propel the Sprint with 4 comfortable passengers to speeds up to 175 km/ h controlled by double A front suspension arms, a solid rear axle, 4 coil springs and 4 Alfin drum brakes. Two years later, Alfa Romeo fitted an all-alloy 2. 6 lt, triple-carburetted, in-line, 6-cylinder DOHC engine of short stroke with harmonic dampers for higher rpms to a 145 bhp and 189 Nm output. The wider power and torque band could now achieve faster and higher speeds up to 200 km/ h and back to standstill by 2 front disc brakes and 2 rear drums. Carrozzeria Bertone restyled the bonnet and lower front panel with a main and 2 supplemental cooling air intakes. With 6999 copies sold over 6 years, the 2600 Sprint was the top seller in the Tipo 106 range. Most interestingly, it was the last Alfa Romeo fitted with a 6-cylinder in-line DOHC prior to give way to Carrozzeria Bertone’s 4-cylinder DOHC equipped GT Giulia Sprint.
Chassis 822780 was produced in 1963 in most desirable Bluette over Dark Red interior to be displayed by Alfa Romeo of Greece and later registered to its first owner, a physician in Athens. Eight years later the car was resprayed by Alfa Romeo in Bianco Antico prior to being sold to an adamant Tipo 106 collector who enjoyed it via crossing countries in Europe. It now presents exactly as parked in 1981 with its original engine, original interior, original chrome trim and offered as a restoration project.
