Description

Open air motoring had always been pivotal in Alfa Romeo’s heritage. Spiders were first offered the year the company was founded and later when mass production facilities were established. In 1958, Alfa Romeo unveiled Tipo 102. 04 as a Spider version of the 2000 series. Its graceful presence was sculptured by Carrozzeria Touring’s Federico Formenti whose talent shaped numerous icons including Ferrari’s166 MM Barchetta, 212 Inter/ Export and 340 America, Maserati’s 3500 GT and 5000 GT Shah of Persia, Aston Martin’s DB4, DB5 and DB6 and Alfa Romeo’s 1900C Sprint, 6C 2500 Super Sport “Villa d’Este” and Disco Volante. Its open, 2-seater body was the first steel monocoque constructed under Carrozzeria Touring’s ‘Superleggera’ principle of super light designs achieving a curb weight just over 1100 kg. Its engine was a 2. 0 lt version of the 1900’s in-line, 4-cylinder DOHC with upgraded valve-actuation system, dual side draft carburation and 8. 5 to 1 compression ratio. The 115 bhp and 152 Nm would propel the Spider to thrilling speeds up to 175 km/ h to be controlled by double A front suspension arms, a solid rear axle, 4 coil springs and 4 drum brakes. Four years later, Alfa Romeo fitted an all-alloy 2. 6 lt, triple carburetted, in-line, 6-cylinder DOHC engine of short stroke and harmonic dampers allowing for higher rpms to a 145 bhp and 189 Nm output. The wider power and torque band could now propel the car to 200 km/ h and back to standstill by 2 disc brakes at the front fitted after mid production unit 1310. Carrozzeria Touring restyled the Spider's body by moving the front lower cruising lights more medially, placing the front indicator lights onto the bumpers, elongating the single air intake engine hood and revising the cabin area to a 2+2 layout. The 2600 Touring was produced in only 2255 copies over 6 years. It was the first car build in Carrozzeria Touring’s Nova Milanese plant and the last Alfa Romeo fitted with a 6-cylinder in-line DOHC.
Chassis 192532 was produced in 1964 to be dispatched and registered to its first owner in Germany. Six years later it was driven to the Mediterranean seaside of Greece to be sold to an adamant Alfa Romeo 2600 collector in Athens. In 1973 with 76506 km a total restoration was undertaken that was never completed due to a closing of the restoration facility. It now presents with its original matching engine, original to the car parts and 1973 A. F. R. A.-supplied spares as a project to be fully restored to its former grace.
