Description
Austin Healey 3000 Full Race Car
The Austin Healey 100/ 6 & 3000 models were the 6 cylinder versions of the original Austin Healey 100, with the wheelbase being extended to accommodate the six cylinder engine. The 100/ 6 was introduced in 1956 but lacked the punch of the 100, due to its 2639cc 100bhp engine with poor carburation & additional weight. The 3000 model was announced in 1959 and was an immediate success around the world, particularly in America. Apart from an uprated 2912cc 124bhp engine, the main change was to add front disc brakes. Production ran until 1967. In period many were used as weekend race & rally cars, some became dedicated race & rally cars, to try to replicate the successes achieved by the famous works race & rally cars. They normally punched well above their weight & continue to do the same today, often embarrassing much more expensive machinery…
EPE is an original UK supplied right hand drive 1957 100/ 6, which was converted to 3000 race specification in the early 1980’s, when historic racing was still in its infancy. Acquired by well-known historic racer David Smithies in 1997. David continued to develop to full FIA specification. David & EPE won the Austin Healey Championship outright in 2003, also in the same year they won the Thoroughbred Sports Car Championship outright. The car also won its class in the Austin Healey Championship in 4 other years. They have numerous outright wins in national and international races. The most highlighted being back to back wins at Dijon with Healey Driver International. EPE is very well known in historic racing circles to this day & is still a very competitive package, achieving several podiums & one outright win in the very competitive Equipe Classic Racing series with her current owner.
The engine is a recently built David Smithies full race specification unit with 6 hours running time. It has been checked over by David before the car was offered for sale. On our own rolling road it produces circa 290bhp at the flywheel. Fitted with a special Smithies steel crank & steel rods, high compression forged pistons, race camshaft, alloy sump & alloy full race cylinder head.
Carburation is from triple Weber 45 DCOE’s. The exhaust is a David Smithies race system.
The gearbox is the later & stronger centre change model with straight cut, close ratio Sebring ratio gears & a competition overdrive. A correct Plate type LSD is fitted along with strengthened race spec. half shafts. Both the gearbox, overdrive & differential were rebuilt by WCE with 11 hours running time.
The bodywork is mainly aluminium, with steel rear wings & boot lid to improve overall balance. It is all in very good cosmetic condition.
