Description
This very elegant Open Tourer "New" Phantom I 40/ 50 left Derby for Hooper's Coachbuilders on 21 December 1928 and was supplied to its first owner, a Mrs Watson on 9th February 1929 as confirmed by the build sheets present in the file.
The car later passed into the hands of a Mr Truelove of Sutton, Surrey (in the late 40's) and eventually found its way to America in the 1960's then briefly in Portugal before finally settling in Florence, Italy where it spend the last good few years in the (late) owner's private collection of many pre-war RR's, Bentley's and Bugatti's. During his ownership the leather hide was completely re-trimmed - an extremely skilled and high-quality job - the woodwork was equally renewed using high-quality walnut veneer to include dashboard, door cappings and a special cabinet behind the division that could easily host a bar.
The original matching number engine starts and runs nicely (it received a 9k overhaul at a RR specialist earlier this year to include the recommissioning of the AutoVac) and is ready for its next chapter in its life with its new custodian. A video of the engine running is available on request.
The hood and frame are removable and the car is also fitted with a very elegant trunk that can carry the side-screens as well as the passenger luggage.
This prewar Rolls-Royce will particularly appeal to the "big block" 6-cyl Phantom aficionados and other Great Gatsby fans out there.
