EXTERIOR
This must be one of the cleanest, most original E30 M3s we’ve ever had the pleasure of selling here at 4 Star, and as one just 25 Roberto Ravaglias it’s extremely rare too. Just 16 examples were produced in sublime Misano Red – one of the best M3 colours in our opinion – and the paintwork here remains in stunning original condition. In fact, aside from a handful of very light frontal stone chips and one small mark on the bottom edge of the chin spoiler, the car remains factory-fresh with even panel gaps, pristine rubber trims, and BMW-stamped glass all round. A true collector’s piece in outstanding show condition, and a car we know very well having sold it to the current owner.
INTERIOR
Much like its Johnny Cecotto twin, the Roberto Ravaglia was gifted special M-Technic cloth with Bison Leather bolsters, which are anthracite and black in this example. Open the door and you’re still greeted by that new car smell. Original interiors of this age in this condition do not come around often; the bolsters are barely worn and the striking M cloth appears as new. Glancing across the driver-focused dash you’ll find a pristine finish to every component with no wear or marking to report. Other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gear knob retain a great factory texture, and the carpets are protected in the footwells by a set of tailored overmats. The boot area is extremely clean and still present with the complete BMW toolkit, first aid kit, and matching spare wheel.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The E30 M3’s S14 engine was designed for racing applications and was, therefore, compact and high-revving. Special features included individual throttle plates for each cylinder, machined intake and exhaust ports, and a crankshaft with eight counterweights. The Ravaglia edition’s catalyst-equipped S14 produced 215hp at 6, 750rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4, 600rpm.
As to be expected the engine bay is exceptionally clean throughout. Everything appears really fresh with no signs of any corrosion, damage or previous poor repair. Both the plenum chamber and valve cover are still wearing their factory Misano Red paint, and traces of original protective wax can also be found on a number of components. All in all, a real treat for the enthusiast.
WHEELS, TYRES AND BRAKES
Sitting on its original 16-inch BBS the M3 looks magnificent. The wheels are correctly finished in black with contrasting silver rims and centre nuts, a feature unique to the Ravaglia and Cecotto editions. On very close inspection there is some light marking to report but certainly nothing worthy of a refurb in our opinion. They are shod in a matching set of Yokohama tyres (not pictured) with 7mm of tread left at the front and 6mm at the rear. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition.
HISTORY FILE
This rare M3 Roberto Ravaglia was first registered in August 1989. It was supplied new by BMW Doncaster and has now driven just 42, 104 miles in the hands of only 4 careful owners, the current owner having purchased it from us back in 2019.
This fine example has clearly been treasured all its life, never needing any restorative work or mechanical re-commissioning. All aspects of the car are amazingly original, the only aftermarket additions being a stainless exhaust and a period-correct 1989 Pioneer cassette player. The History File is complete with the original BMW document pack, all owner’s manuals, the service booklet, radio handbooks, numerous MOT certificates and a raft of invoices. Services have been carried out at the following mileages: 1, 785 – 4, 525 – 5, 705 – 17, 566 – 24, 402 – 31, 115 – 31, 800 – 34, 186 – 34, 748 – 36, 843 – 38, 505 – 39, 979 – 40, 807 – 41, 012 – 41, 130 – 41, 500 – and most recently at BMW at 42, 011 miles; brand new tyres were also fitted at this time.
