Description
The Citroen 2CV represents a milestone in automotive history not only for its role in societal growth but also for its ingenuous engineering.
After a nationwide survey, a need was discovered for a low maintenance saloon to serve the needs of the French rural population. Much like VW, Citroen addressed it with an ‘umbrella’ type body over a 2. 4 m wheelbase platform powered by an air-cooled boxer engine fitted onto the driven axle. Unlike the Beetle, the 2CV embodied a series of innovations most notable of which was its suspension system that permitted delivery of 50 kgs of farming and fragile goods unharmed by the rough terrains of rural roads. Designed by Alphonse Forceau and Marcel Chinon, the system interconnected the front wheel suspension to the rear one in a manner that cabin pitch was maintained level at all terrains. This was achieved by a canister of springs mounted horizontally on each side of the vehicle to transmit any front wheel deflection to the rear by an equal yet opposite way. Furthermore, the set up of opposing front (leading) and rear (trailing) arms allowed for a 4cm wheelbase expansion upon additional loading with no effect on handling. Interestingly, the expansion was independent per side of the vehicle permitting for an expanding outer with a contracting inner upon hard cornering. Overall, the suspension was so sophisticated that remained unchanged for the entire 42 years of production and was re-engineered by Korres in the 2014 P4's multilink suspension system.
The 2CV 6 Club featured was produced in 1980 for the German market with the revised 602 cc engine of higher efficiency, greater torque and lower fuel consumption. It features all the favorable upgrades including the height-adjustable rectangular headlights (introduced in 1975), padded single spoke steering wheel (1973), individual front seats (1971), 3-point seat belts (1972) and ashtrays (1973). In 1999 it was imported in Greece and in 2019 it underwent a total cosmetic and mechanical restoration with special attention given to the Forceau-Chinon suspension system.
