Description
In May 1986 FIA decided that competition should not be based on engine power alone and terminated the ever so dangerous Group B class. The newfound Group A regulations limited maximum power thereby promoting development in other equally critical areas of the vehicle such as the steering, suspension and drivetrain. Homologation required the production of at least 5000 units within 12 months of the model to be modified into Group A specifications. Notably, Lancia's Delta HF 4WD production vehicle was developed around Group B Delta S4 all wheel drive system making it the only promising candidate to address FIA's regulations. The highly sophisticated system used 3 differentials to maximize grip and outperform all rear wheel drive competition. The middle epicyclic geared differential split torque by 56/ 44 front to back axles. However, if one the 2 axles rotated at different speeds, the Ferguson viscous coupling would alter the torque ratio by sending more power to the slower axle. Furthermore, torque to the rear axle would be distributed via a Torsen differential of 70% maximum locking that would ensure more power directed to the slower wheel. Overall the system was very effective in applying all 165 bhp of the road version to the 4 wheels but not so when power was raised to 240 bhp in its Group A variant. Despite winning the 1987 World Rally Champion, Lancia addressed the traction control and power delivery via revising the Delta 4WD into the Integrale 8V that featured all proper modifications. In specific, fitting larger fenders permitted for larger wheels that offered superior traction and cornering. Accordingly the brakes and suspension were modified to provide room for greater power from the engine. The 8-valve unit was treated with a larger 11-blade Garrett T3 turbocharger, a bigger intercooler and new valves reaching 185 bhp in its road version and 295 bhp in its Group A tuned variant. The Integrale was the first Delta designed to Group A specifications and despite all subsequent upgrades it was the most successful of its Delta siblings with 14 World Rally Championship wins and both manufacturer's and driver's titles.
The Delta offered was based on an HF 4WD prior to being fully upgraded to Integrale 8V Group A tarmac specifications. The never-before-raced body was stripped to undergo lightweight modifications and install an FIA-approved 6-point roll cage. The engine was developed to an output of 295 bhp via cylinder head porting, forged crankshaft, rods, pistons and revised ECU. The suspension received fully adjustable telescopic shocks, new crossbars and polyurethane bushing. Fully FIA HTP certified, this powerful hillclimb performer achieved numerous distinctions in class in the Hellenic Motorsport Federation Championship.
