Description
Supplied new in April 1967, this original UK supplied RHD Mercedes Benz 250 SL is in immaculate condition and presents wonderfully in Silver with black interior and dark blue mohair hood. It drivers as well as it looks with the desirable automatic transmission and having been fully inspected, setup and refurbished as required by a Pagoda Specialist that works to exacting standards.
Introduced at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show, production of the 250SL version of the W113 “Pagoda” cars only lasted for 13 months from December 1966 to January 1968. During this short period only 5196 cars were built, precise RHD production figures are not known but accepted opinion suggests that less than 10% of the total production were RHD cars, making this 250SL an incredibly rare car. Reviewing “Number Left” websites suggests only 44 of these 1967 250SL cars are still licensed in the UK including both LHD and RHD versions.
Having established this 250SL is incredibly rare, I can now explain why the 250SL version of the iconic W113 Pagoda cars are also the most desirable. The 250SL cars combine the stiffer sporting suspension and earlier styling clues of the first generation 230SL cars with the improvements of the better M129. 11 seven bearing crankshaft engine and rear disc brakes fitted to the later 280SL generation cars, albite in large 2. 8 litre form. So the best of both worlds and a larger 82 liter fuel tank for those long road trips.
This particular car only shows 5 former keepers on the V5C and the mileage has just turned to 40000 miles, supported by old MOTs going back to 1994 that show the mileage as being 36844 miles. At sometime in the past the car was re-painted Ivory but the car has been returned to its original Silver colour via a bare metal respray that showed no rust in the body at all prior to its delivery to the current owner. The current owner acquired the 250SL in September 2018 and has used it sparingly since then which is why it is up for sale as it simply isn’t used enough and these cars do not like standing idle.
During the restoration and re-fresh prior to the current owner buying the car the engine was fully re-built using new pistons and liners etc and every component was striped, checked and either replaced or re-furbished. This 250SL drives exactly like it should and feels very tight and together. As you can see from the pictures the underside is as immaculate as the rest of the car.
To bring the car up to date it is fitted with a Becker Europa Vintage Radio modified with modern internals allowing full mobile phone and Bluetooth connectivity supplied by Chrome London at a cost of £1000 in 2018.
It is very hard to fault this car, it drives so well and looks magnificent. It is expensive but the top end prices of Pagodas reflect the quality of the cars as opposed to the many cheaper cars that are available. In addition this is an original RHD UK supplied car with the preferable automatic transmission. It comes with some history, old MOTs and an original Owners Manual.
