Description
This stunning and super rare colour schemed 420SL finished in stunning Blue-Black with Burgundy Leather. It was supplied new in March 1987 by Puttocks of Guildford, Surrey to Mr A. R. Perry of Cromwell Holdings, a long established commercial property company based locally in Epsom.
It was ordered with the desirable options of Air Conditioning, leather front seats, orthopaedic adjustment to drivers seat, tinted glass, electric windows, headlamp wash-wipe, outside temperature gauge and the limited slip differential.
Having now covered just under 31, 000 miles, this stunning car now presents in quite exceptional condition. The paintwork is excellent and the interior is unmarked. It has a period Becker radio/ cassette unit. All chromework and rubber trims are first class. The under bonnet and boot compartment are also in superb condition, with the factory toolkit and First Aid box unused.
Naturally it has both tops and the original Black soft top is in great shape. It has the full leather book pack with the owner’s handbook, radio instructions and the massively stamped service book, not forgetting three complete sets of keys. As an aesthetic point, the 420SL model does not carry the rather ugly black boot spoiler of the 500SL, a small thing which so many comment on!
We may summarise that Mr Perry liked this car so much that he kept it for the next 25 years, and as such it has the most wonderful history folder!
The comprehensive service history during his ownership starts with the pre-delivery check sheet from Puttocks dated 20th March 1987. It was then first serviced by Puttocks in October ’87 at 13543 miles with two further services carried out by Woking Motors annually in 1988 and 1989 at 2415 and 3921 miles respectively. Royce Engineering, noted Rolls Royce specialists, carried out the next service in July 1990 at 6789 miles. Mr Perrys company, Cromwell Holdings also has an office in the Bournemouth area and the car was to spend the rest of his tenure down there. Initially serviced by MB dealers Majestic Garage in 1991, 1992 and 1993 at 9922, 12017 and 13589 miles. It was then serviced on an almost annual basis by local Rolls Royce specialists, Silver Lady Services, based in Bournemouth. The very fully stamped service books makes for fascinating reading and the history file also contains many invoices from Silver Lady Services with the mileage rising to 28, 450 miles on 28th June 2012.
This was the day that this car was then passed to the next owner, Ian Lillicrap from Cornwall, and it was serviced on the very day that ownership was transferred! Mr Lillicrap is a noted collector who we have also sold cars to over the years. The history file notes that an MOT was carried out in May 2013 at 28, 457 miles. This car was next offered for sale by respected dealer, William Loughran, and sold by him on the 2nd April 2014 to Mr Lee Parker. An MOT just prior to this sale on 31st March notes the mileage at 29, 097. Mr Parker is well known to our Company having also bought a MB Pagoda from us and he continued the tradition of very low usage of this car. He used MB specialists, Roger Edwards Motors, to service the car and there are invoices on file for services in May 2014 at 29, 267 miles and June 2020 at 29, 871 miles, a mere 604 miles in six years! Naturally this is substantiated by the MOT history.
In short, this car is exactly how one might expect such a low mileage and low ownership car to be. Also note that the 420SL is the rarest of the R107 models with a right drive production figure of just over 2, 000 worldwide.
Look at the photos carefully, this is a great find!
