Description
A stunning and spectacular motorcar in the form of this 1961 Fourth Generation Lincoln Continental.
Designed by Ford Design’s Vice President Elwood Engel, the 1961 Lincoln Continental received a Bronze Medal by the Industrial Design Institute (IDI) of New York, NY. This institute rarely gives awards to vehicles. It also won Car Life‘s 1961 Engineering Excellence Award. Famed for its rearward hinged rear doors or ‘suicide doors’ as they became more commonly known, this Fourth Generation Lincoln was destined to become one of the worlds most iconic cars, later impounded by the infamous JFK association.
In my opinion, the 61 model is the prettiest, certainly the rarest with its more detailed front grille and curved front windshield, these styling details were lost on the 62-63 models.
Resplendent in Factory special order Honey Beige complimented perfectly with again factory special order linen cashmere wool interior, which I am told came from Scotland! The interior is superb and in my opinion the wool works so much better than the standard factory leather. Overall, this has to be one of the nicest cars we have ever had the pleasure in offering for sale.
It is an absolute credit to its previous keeper and Lincoln owners club magazine editor, who maintained the car to such a high standard the car winning several senior awards at Lincoln owners club meetings. His intention was to maintain originality in its up keep so was always trying to source the best used or new old stock parts where necessary in order to keep the wonderful patina the car has. The car has had just two previous keepers from new.
On the road, it’s not that often you come across a car that drives just as it should, what I mean by that is, like a Continental should. There are no rattles or squeaks one might expect from a vehicle way north of a half a century old and certainly not this big! It glides in a straight line, wafting along with little more than a whoosh from its 7 litre 430 cubic inch V8 that produces some 415 lbs of torque!
This is a totally unmolested, collector quality Continental that is sure to bring vast amounts of pleasure to its lucky new owners. The car is available for viewing at our premises located near Horsham West Sussex. Please feel free to enquire. Tel: the details below
