MG Midget MKIV RWA - Heritage Bodyshell Resto - Flame Red SOLD

MORE PICTURES HERE: - details above

Well, where do I start?! RWA Midgets are often seen as the most sought after of the lot – and as this Flame Red example has been subject to a comprehensive professional Heritage Bodyshell restoration - surely that makes it the best of the best! It represents excellent value for money and is a great investment. In fact, Mike Authers, the Midget Guru, recently had a very similar car in stock that was a great deal more money!

The previous owner had the car from 1995, and it was rebuilt onto its brand new British Motor Heritage bodyshell in around 2004. No expense was spared and this was a comprehensive rebuild – not just a ‘stick rusty old bits onto a new shell’ like some of them are!

The shell was supplied by the MG Owners Club, ready painted in glorious Flame Red. The engine was subject to a major rebuild which included new bearings, oil pump, timing chain, and even a new flywheel. A recon gearbox has also been fitted. Most items were replaced, including all of the suspension, brakes, fuel tank and lines, new steering rack, new wiring loom, new windscreen – the list is just endless!

The bodywork remains excellent – with no signs of rust anywhere – the wing-top seams and A panels are all bubble-free! Again, it’s nice to see a Heritage car that has been professionally painted and all of the panels have been gapped well. The doors shut with a satisfying clunk. The chromework is in good all-round condition, the bumpers are the originals so are not immaculate but they’re much better fitting and harder-wearing than repro items! The chrome wire wheels were fitted at the time of the rebuild and remain in excellent condition, including the unused spare.

Mechanically, the car is in good order. The engine starts readily and runs well, ticking over at around 700rpm, as it should. Exhaust note is lovely and the car pulls and drives very well (for a Midget!). Oil pressure is just as it should be, and the car does not overheat – nor does it appear to use any excess oil or water. Electrically, everything works just as it should, including the heater blower. The gear selection is really nice and slick, with no synchromesh issues, and the car stops in a straight line, just as you’d expect, and rides well with no knocks or bangs. They’re excellent fun to drive!

The interior is in very nice order, having had replacement door cards, carpet set etc. The seats have new foams and the leather covers are in pretty good shape. A period 8-Track player is fitted, and a box-full of 8-Tracks are included in the sale! The hood is in good order - also included is full-length tonneau. The boot has been carpeted with an MGOC kit and looks great.

Since the rebuild, the car has had minimal usage, covering around 12, 000 miles in the hands of its enthusiast owner. The car has been used regularly so doesn’t suffer from the aches and groans of a rarely-used car. It is, of course, tax and MOT exempt.

There is a raft of paperwork with the car which dates back to the early 1990s, which includes a photographic record of the rebuild and hundreds of bills and receipts for parts and work done before, during and since the rebuild.

Really, to build a top quality example on a Heritage Shell these days will cost you around £30, 000 – making this one an absolute bargain. An unpainted shell alone now costs over £10, 000+VAT, and that’s not even painted!

All in all, this is an absolutely stunning little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. No, it’s not a concourse-condition show winner, but it’s a car that has been restored very well indeed, and I’m sure that you won’t find another Heritage Bodyshell car of this quality, for this price anywhere.
