1961 Morris Minor 948cc - Porcelain Green - Unmolested example! SOLD

Many more pictures here: - details above

I am delighted to offer for sale this lovely little 1961 Morris Minor 4-door saloon.

If you’re looking for a highly original and ummolested example example which presents nicely, then this is most likely the car for you! This is a really great example of one of Britain’s favourite cars – charming looks, combined with simple mechanicals, means that the Moggy was a big hit for almost two decades. With its 948 A-Series engine, it’s cheap to insure for everyone (including youngsters – the Morris Minor Owners Club will be able to supply details for a cheap insurance scheme). Of course, being MOT and Tax exempt means it's an investment that will cost very little to run and maintain!

This particular car has had just 3 owners from new and has just been recommissioned for the road after a couple of years of being laid up. As you will see from the very clean MOT history, before storage, the car was used and very well kept by its previous elderly owner (who was also a pilot!). I bought the car to give it a full restoration - but having looked closely at it, it’s very original indeed and a thorough restoration would take away the fantastic patina and ‘authentic classic’ feel that this car has in shed-loads. It simply oozes charm and character! I personally think the car should be used as-is and its patina should be retained; but I suppose that’s up to the new owner.

Bodily, the car is in astoundingly solid and original order! All of the external panelwork is steel and incredibly solid – the door bottoms are rot free, as are the wing-bottoms and all of the other usual Minor rot-spots. The car has been repainted at some point in its life (in its original Porcelain Green colour), and has a good finish – but do be aware that this is not a concourse car – there is the odd touched-up chip here and there. Amazingly all of the car’s original spot-welds are still visible on the rear valence, rain gutters etc – see the extra pictures for more detail. The brightwork polishes up well, but it is original so there is some pitting.

Structurally the car is in fantastic original order. I haven’t waxoyled it so you can see exactly what’s there. Chassis legs, spring hangers, sills, inner wings etc all appear to be rock solid and mostly original! If you view the car you’ll be very impressed with the state of the structure.

The interior is very original indeed, and certainly supports the low mileage of 64, 000. The headlining it excellent, as are the door cards – the seats, are of course starting to crack here and there but there are no unsightly rips and tears. It’s just fantastic to see a car that hasn’t been messed around too much! The dashboard is also very good indeed, and the paint has the same shine as it does on the exterior panels. A radio is fitted along with a few extra gauges and switches, such as a Barnacle Ammeter. Other period additions include a Smiths rear screen heater and an electric windscreen washer system, complete with glass bottle!

Mechanically, the engine starts and runs very healthily indeed and is one of the sweetest sounding A-Series motors I’ve come across in a long time. It ticks over almost silently at 600rpm, and again, I think this supports the low mileage. It’s just had an oil change, carburettor rebuild, timing setup and a cooling system flush, along with new coil, rotor arm, points, condenser and replacement leads. It starts with no more than a glancing touch on the starter button from both cold and hot, and pulls nicely.

The brakes (along with the handbrake) work fine, having just had new wheel cylinders all round. The gearbox doesn’t whine, and doesn’t jump out of gear either. The rear axle is nice and quiet and there are no clunks when taking up drive. It rides very well and there are no nasty bumps or rattles like you often get with unkempt examples.

The engine bay is clean and tidy – as mentioned earlier, the inner wings and chassis rails have no patchwork repairs - it would detail up very nicely indeed, but looks very presentable as-is.

It’s so unusual to see such a straight, honest and original example of a Minor - this is a bargain price for a fantastic car which attracts a great deal of attention wherever it goes. If you come to view the car, I think you will be impressed with how little it’s been messed around with – it’s certainly not a tarted-up example like so many others that you see for sale. Obviously it’s not a concourse car but it’s in very good order, and I challenge you to find a similar car in this price bracket. To all intents and purposes, this is a healthy, reliable car that could be put into regular use without worry. You will be able to see this when you come to view.
