1970 1972 MGB Roadster - Midnight Blue - Older Restoration, MOT'd SOLD

More pictures here: - details above

I bought this car with the intention of taking it to the next level but other more pressing projects have taken way!

The car has an MOT with no advisories until August 2019 (and the car is of course both Tax and MOT exempt), but please bear in mind that I’m selling this car as a rolling restoration project car. It is not a fully restored concourse example – otherwise I would be asking twice as much! However, for the price I am asking, you could still make serious improvements to the car and not worry about losing money when you come to sell it in the future.

The car was subject to a no-expense spared £14k restoration by an MG specialist in 2004, on an excellent Californian bodyshell. The structure remains very good indeed. Since then, the car has had further improvements – in recent years, including:

·  Unleaded cylinder head conversion
·  Engine rebuild
·  New clutch, complete with pipes and slave cylinder
·  Full suspension rebuild, new king pins, etc, along with the fitment of Spax adjustable shock absorbers
·  Rebuilt hubs and new wheel bearings
·  Halogen headlamps fitted
·  New oil pressure and water temperature gauge
·  New batteries
·  Replacement soft top
·  .. and much more!

The car was in the previous owner’s hands from the time of the rebuild, but has had very little use over recent years. The car does have 12 months MOT but would benefit from further recommissioning works, so I am selling it as a rolling restoration project.

The car requires some cosmetic attention. The bodywork is very straight and sound with excellent panel gaps etc. The paint, in the main, has a very good shine with an excellent finish, but thanks to being kept under a car cover, there are some areas which are just beginning to deteriorate. The worst panel is probably the boot lid, which has been repainted since the restoration, but the colour match is slightly ‘off’. The driver’s side sill has some minor paint flaking but the metalwork is solid underneath. There are a couple of similar areas, again due to being kept under a car cover. The new owner may wish to have the car repainted, or you could quite happily use it just as it is, with only minor touch-ups here and there. The external brightwork is showing signs of being stored under a cover – not horrendous, but not brand new either. Chrome wire wheels are fitted, and are in good serviceable condition with some pitting starting to show.

Structurally, the car appears to be very good indeed solid where it needs to be – being a Californian shell, it has escaped the need for patchwork-quilt welding repairs and presents very well indeed. The inner wings, sills, front wing trumpets, spring hangers etc are very solid indeed. The floors under the carpets are free from rust and patched repairs. I think you’ll struggle to find a car with a better body shell at this price.

The interior is nice and tidy - some cosmetic care here would work wonders, and further increase the car's value for little outlay. The carpets are in good order, and the seat foams have not sagged. The hood is in good order – one of the fixings on the bodywork needs refitting. The ignition column shroud was broken so needs replacement, and the fuel gauge is currently inaccurate.

Mechanically, the car appears to run well - oil pressure is excellent. It would benefit greatly from a carb tune and general fettle. Overdrive is fitted and functions fine, and the gearbox is nice and tight with no apparent synchromesh issues. As I said, the car has done minimal mileage over recent years, so some fine tuning and regular use would work wonders.

The engine bay is probably the worst aspect of the whole car – whilst the inner wings are very clean and shiny, the rocker cover, air filter housings and heater box haven’t taken kindly to being stored under a cover, so have surface rust. However, it would be very easy to repaint these components and tidy up the engine bay very easily. The radiator core is starting to crumble a little, but the car remains cool, but a new owner may want to replace as a precaution, as part of the recommissioning.

All in all - It’s no trailer queen, but with some cosmetic work, the value could be increased substantially – don’t forget, whatever money you put into a solid example, you’ll get more out when you come to sell (and then some!). It’s an excellent basis for a rolling restoration. Unless you are local I would suggest collection by trailer etc would be sensible, just because the it has done such limited mileage in recent years – I can also provide quotes to have the car delivered to you after you’ve been to view it.

If the car does not sell in the current condition we will be doing the work and relisting for £9-10k.
