Triumph Herald 1961 Convertible

Highlights

  • Owned for last 33 years
  • All original condition
  • Rare flatbed chassis
  • Genuine low mileage
  • Recently serviced

The Appeal

A completely original classic convertible that has been owned by the same person for the last 33 years, keeping it regularly maintained, serviced and garaged for the majority of his ownership.
This car has the rare flatbed chassis and has never been restored, and now, having lost the opportunity to garage the car, it is now coming to auction.
This is a great opportunity to acquire an all original, mechanically sound Triumph Herald that deserves some love and attention.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1961
  • Bought by the current owner at age 16 as their first car in 1989
  • Handwritten bill of sale survives
  • Owned from new and for 28 years by the same family who sold the car to the vendor
  • Regularly maintained and serviced
  • Never broken down or needed roadside assistance since 1989
  • Good service history with Triumph specialist for the last 10 years
  • Comprehensive history file
  • Owners handbook
  • Many MOT certificates and tax discs
  • 2 sets of keys
  • Spare wheel and jack
  • MOT exempt
  • V5c present
  • Original brochure
  • Original and desirable registration number
*Owned and loved for the last 33 years there have been a few changes on the V5c recorded over these years but they were all within the family, mostly moving the ownership between father and son a couple of times. The vendor informs us that they have personally driven every mile since 1989.

The Interior

  • All original interior
  • Updated radio installed
For its age the interior has fared pretty well but it is all original and has never been restored so there’s plenty of signs of use and wear but its all there and, given the age of the car, it’s pretty good.
There are no cracks in the dashboard and all the instruments and switchgear work as they should, and the wooden facia has no damage and will look great after a good rubdown and re-varnishing.
Carpets and door cards would benefit from a good clean and tidy up and the vendor informs us that the boot carpet is the original item form 1961. Some investigation is required regarding the heater blower, which is currently not working.
Another small niggle is the passenger door which won’t open with the external handle and needs to be locked from the inside to prevent it opening while in motion.

The vendor informs us that the only addition to the car in 61 years has been a radio.

The Exterior

  • Original Litchfield Green Paintwork
  • Rare handle on the bonnet
  • Original rear luggage rack
Never having been fully resprayed, the bodywork is now beginning to show its age. There are several areas of bubbling paint to be found, though the body panels and bumpers are all straight without any significant dents or damage. The vendor informs us that the paint on the bonnet and sides is factory.
The car would benefit from a new hood and frame but the external rubbers and chrome fittings are all in remarkably good condition and the lights and windows are also free from any cracks. The vendor believes these items to be original as they came with the car.
The original steel wheels and hubcaps will look great with a bit of work to clean them up and overall the car presents pretty well for its age.

The Mechanics

  • Original 1200cc engine
  • Low genuine mileage
  • Service history
  • Recently fully serviced with new water pump
Regularly driven and maintained throughout its pampered ownership this car starts and runs well and has just had a new water pump and full service.

When the vendor acquired the car, the engine was seized, however the original unit was soon made serviceable again and the car has been in regular use ever since.
Over the years there’s been plenty of remedial work to the running gear and mechanics, including the brakes, gearbox, steering rack, clutch and so mechanically this car appears to be very sound overall.
New tyres, battery and a stainless steel exhaust system were fitted in 2015 with the car only covering around 3,000 miles since.

The Summary

A much loved British classic that has a great history, low genuine mileage and has never been restored. So if all original is what you’re looking for and you want the rare flatbed chassis, now’s your chance.
