The Appeal
The CLK is a rather interesting series, which combines styling from the E-Class, and mechanics from the C-Class to form a lineup of entry-level luxury coupes & convertibles. This CLK 220 belongs to the second generation of CLK, which introduced a host of technological improvements and new comforts.
This CLK also shows off the “Avantgarde” trim level, which sports numerous upgrades over the entry-level spec, including blue tinted windows, larger alloys, and sportier suspension. This particular example also shows off a manual transmission, which is seemingly a rather rare specification for this generation of CLK 220 CDI.

The manual transmission offers greater driver engagement, whilst the trusty diesel powerplant provides buckets of torque and respectable mileage. As a result, this CLK 220 CDI seemingly sits perfectly on the edge of a sporty manual coupe, with all the practicality of a reliable diesel. It’s one of those vehicles that would suit the daily commute but would also happily provide hours of fun on a B road.
The History and Paperwork
- Just 4 former keepers
- Great service history
- MOT until September 2023
This CLK has seemingly been enjoyed as intended over the years, now showing 122k on the clock with 4 former keepers noted on the V5C. The vehicle also appears to have been very well maintained and cared for over the years, as supported by the included service history. The included Mercedes service booklet shows 10 stamps, while additional invoices detail more recent servicing, such as a service and new glow plugs around 5 thousand miles ago in 2021.
Included alongside the aforementioned service history, is the rest of the original Mercedes-Benz backpack and folder, along with the V5C document, previous MOT certificates, and a respectable collection of additional invoices. These invoices detail repairs, servicing, and consumables.
The Interior
- Leather seats
- Aluminium interior trim
- Avantgarde specification details
- Multi-function leather steering wheel
Packed with Avantgarde trim-specific detailing such as the aluminium effect trim, the interior of this CLK 220 is a very comfortable and stylish environment. Although not the highest spec in its class, the leather trim, and classy Mercedes-Benz design cues make this a very stylish space to spend your time.
The interior also presents itself rather impressively for its age and mileage, now showing only a few minor signs of wear, mainly with the seats. As you would expect, the driver’s seat does show the most noticeable wear, in the form of slight leather wear to the side bolster. With the exception of a couple of minor marks as pictured, the passenger seats follow suit, presenting themselves with very few faults indeed.
Both the carpeting and sleek headliner show off an equally well-preserved finish, no doubt a testament to the build quality and care shown by previous owners. Both door cards present themselves similarly as impressive, with only a few minor marks to observe upon close inspection.
All interior controls and functions also work exactly as intended with no known faults to report. As an added bonus, controls show only minimal wear to contact points, as do the steering wheel and shift knob.

The Exterior
- Metallic silver paintwork
- 17” AMG design 5-spokes
- Excellent condition
This CLK 220 presents itself very well for its age and mileage, still offering plenty of shine to the metallic silver paintwork. Expectedly, there are minor defects and blemishes to note with the paintwork, such as the expected front-end chips, along with cracking and scuffs to both the front and rear bumpers, as pictured. The passenger’s side wing mirror also shows a small amount of damage, yet remains perfectly functional. Finally, the stubby aerial and bodywork do show minor chips and blemishes upon close inspection.
Later Avantgarde specified CLKs were fitted with 17” 5-spoke alloys from the factory, as opposed to the 18” wheels fitted to earlier models. Although difficult to verify, it is likely that the 5-spoke AMG wheels shown today were fitted to the car from the factory. Regardless of origin, these wheels suit the vehicle brilliantly and add further sporty hints to the design. That said, the wheels would definitely benefit from a refurbishment, as signs of age and curbing are rather evident.
Badging, glass, and details complement the paintwork well, with only a few minor defects to note. Both headlights and taillights appear to be free from noticeable damage, although a good machine polish would certainly do wonders for the aged headlights.
Overall, the vehicle presents itself in a condition very much in line with what you’d perhaps expect for the mileage. It’s perfectly usable as a trusty daily driver, but retains enough of its finish to still attract admiration.
The Mechanics
- 2.1L diesel 4-cylinder
- Manual 6-speed
- Long MOT
- Regularly serviced
- Drives brilliantly
- New glow plugs in 2021
As previously mentioned, this CLK is fitted with a manual gearbox, which is seemingly a very rare option for these coupes. In fact, the vast majority of examples available in today's market appear to be automatic, making this quite a desirable specification. The manual gearbox provides just the right amount of driver engagement, to give this coupe a sporty feel.
Buyers will be pleased to know that the vehicle fires up right away and is said to perform without a known mechanical or electrical fault. No doubt benefiting from years of regular maintenance as supported by the included paperwork, this Mercedes-Benz is ready to impress and will likely make a dependable workhorse or weekend toy for many years to come.
Summary
This CLK 220 CDI presents a fantastic opportunity to snag yourself a very dependable, yet surprisingly sporty diesel coupe. This Mercedes-Benz shows off a rare manual 6-speed, along with an excellent maintenance record, and a long MOT for worry-free driving until next September. The vehicle also boasts the Avantgarde trim level and shows off an excellent interior, and respectable exterior condition.
