Hot on the heels of the V8 models that redefined the entire Porsche range, the German company realised that with the Cayenne, it was onto a winner.
After the initial rush for the new SUV, a more accessible 3.2-litre model appeared, with even less Porsche DNA than the V8s courtesy of its VW/Audi 3.2-litre V6 powerplant. The engine was developed for the new VW Phaeton and Audi TT V6, among others, but the Cayenne offered it a natural home – after all, it was a punchy unit with 250bhp to offer, so it wasn’t significantly behind the naturally aspirated 4.5 V8.
Today, the Cayenne is tipped by many to be the next big thing – a game-changing Porsche that redefined the brand and made it VW Group’s most profitable business unit as the market for premium SUVs exploded in the 2000s. It’s hard to believe it’s now over 20 years since it was launched.
