NO RESERVE - 2001 Toyota MR2 (W30)

Highlights

  • Engine rebuild 10,000 miles ago
  • Retrimmed leather upholstery
  • MOT to August 2023
  • Comprehensive history file

The Appeal

If you want a small, fun, mid-engined sports car that’s economical to run and reliable, then there really is only one sensible choice – Toyota’s MR2. By the time the third generation (W30) was launched, it was a fully-fledged roadster and featured a pokey 138hp VVTi engine that pushed the featherweight from 0-62mph in under seven seconds.
This is a very attractive example that has seen extensive maintenance and care over the years, both mechanically and cosmetically. Garaged and rarely used by the current owner, it is now ready for a new owner to enjoy. If the idea of a mechanically sorted, nicely presented and fun little roadster appeals to you, then you can;t go far wrong with this – it’s perfect for the upcoming summer!

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in June 2001
  • 10 owners from new
  • Current owner since August 2020
  • Other than a few summer runs, the car has spent the best part of the last three years garaged and SORN
  • Current MOT to 29th August 2023
  • 133,569 miles, verified by the MOT record
  • Complete with the owner’s handbooks
  • Current V5C in the vendor’s name
  • Comprehensive folder of history, maintenance and servicing invoices

The Interior

  • Refurbished red leather seats show very well, with some minor evidence of light wear, but no major wear, marks or damage
  • Newly fitted black carpet set and matched black floor mats
  • Electric windows and door mirrors
  • Double din Kenwood CD/radio system with Bluetooth, USB port and Aux connection
  • Twin retractable cup holders
  • All of the instruments and controls look to be in fine fettle, with some wear from use commensurate with the car’s age, but no significant marks or damage apparent
  • We did note a small crack in the plastic trim behind the handbrake
  • Small “frunk” luggage area, unused spare wheel complete with cover, small toolkit
  • The vendor reports no faults or issues with any of the cabin’s features

The Exterior

  • Handsome silver paintwork is in largely good condition, having been resprayed prior to the current keeper’s ownership
  • There are a few minor marks and blemishes, and a few areas of light overspray on some of the plastics, but nothing that would concern us
  • All the body panels and trim elements look to be in good order, with no signs of notable corrosion
  • Unfortunately, as the vendor was pulling the car out of the garage for the photos, the rear off-side panel and sill got scraped
  • Newly fitted red fabric convertible roof is in excellent condition and operates well
  • There is a small area of delamination to the upper edge of the windscreen on the passenger side, but this is nowhere near the driver’s field of vision
  • New headlights have been fitted and look to be crystal clear
  • New 15-inch Toyota five-spoke alloys have been fitted, with a fresh set of tyres
  • Detachable chrome rear luggage rack

The Mechanics

  • 1,794cc, 16-valve, naturally aspirated four-cylinder with VVT-i
  • 138hp / 171Nm, all delivered to the rear wheels
  • The engine was rebuilt and a new clutch fitted at about 124,000 miles, with a photo record of the work undertaken
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • New battery fitted
  • New radiator fitted
  • Upgrade from single to twin fan arrangement (the single fan unit is available from the vendor)
  • TTE performance exhaust system
  • The vendor advises that the handbrake linkage may need some attention, while the most recent MOT advises that the brake discs may require replacement
  • Oil and filters service in 2022
  • The vendor reports that the car starts, runs and drives very well, with no mechanical issues they are aware of

Summary

Handsome and great fun to drive, the W30 MR2 makes a great, usable daily sports car. With some minor cosmetic care, this example would be very lovely indeed. We think it’s something of a gem.
