THE APPEAL
With the new L322 Range Rover just around the corner, Land Rover’s marketing team had to get creative with the last 18 months of P38 production, with a realm of special editions joining the ranks in order to bolster sales.
Among them was this – the Bordeaux. Finished only in Alveston Red with Lightstone leather and red piping, plus matching dark red carpets, it tipped the scales at £39,995 when new – almost as cheap as a 4.0 SE, but with a sumptuous specification that was a halfway house between SE and HSE.
Today, it’s a highly desirable thing. Not only is the Range Rover P38a is one of the cars of the moment – a real up-and-coming classic – but the 2001 and 2002 models are actively sought-after by Range Rover fans in London and Birmingham, as their Euro 4 Type Approval means they are exempt from ULEZ or CAZ emissions penalties.
With the ULEZ zone set to expand to cover all London Boroughs this summer, here’s a stylish and well-trimmed P38 that you can continue to use in London and other low emissions zones with impunity – well worth the trip to Lancashire to pick it up, in other words.

But being a 2001 model, this one has added value. It’s a P38 that you can use freely across the ULEZ and other low emissions zones across the UK, meaning a luxury V8-engined SUV is still a viable proposition for urban motorists who don’t wish to be denied such a privilege as a result of legislation. 2001-on P38s are hot property for a reason, so don’t miss out.
