THE APPEAL
There aren’t many people who don’t love the idea of owning a classic Jaguar. But maybe you want the reliability of something more modern? Enter the Jaguar S-type, with a take on the classic MK2. The S-type was launched in 1999 with a choice of engines to suit everyone. This particular 2001 model has the well-established 3.0 litre V6 with automatic transmission.
Jaguars have always been known for their luxury, and the S-type doesn’t differ in any way. Sand leather, electric seats, electric steering column and air conditioning are just some of the features the well-specced interior has to offer. In addition, mechanically, the Jaguar has modern-day engineering, which will give you more reliability and better fuel economy, and to top it off, it is ULEZ-compliant.
Certainly a car to watch as an up and coming modern classic, as nice examples are becoming less as time goes on.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Registration document is present
- Two previous keepers
- UK Registered 15th November 2001
- Owner’s handbooks
- Two keys
- Last keeper since 2010
- MOT valid until 8th July 2023
The Jaguar looks to have been well maintained when looking through the paperwork. It was in ownership with the previous keeper since 2010, who enjoyed approximately 30,000 miles in the S type. The Jaguar has been subject to an insurance claim and is listed as a Class N. This is reported to be non-structural and was a minor mark and dent on the bumper moulding, which the vendor does have a picture of.
THE INTERIOR
- Light Sand full leather trim package
- Air conditioning
- Electric front seats
- Electric steering column
Jaguar didn’t disappoint with the S-type Inside, and opening the door gives the satisfaction that you are about to step inside a well-built, high-quality automobile. This particular Jaguar has been finished in sand leather and is a breath of fresh air giving a light and airy feel as opposed to a darker coloured interior.
The electric front seats are in excellent condition for the 75,545 miles covered. There is some light age-related cracking to the leather, as you would expect, and a small amount of colour has worn from the driver's bolster. The rear seat doesn’t look to have had a tremendous amount of use over the years, so it is in excellent condition. The door cards are all in good order with no noticeable scuffs or damage apart from a couple of tiny marks on the driver's door.
Looking at the dashboard, which is also finished in a matching colour to the rest of the interior, the instruments have an odometer reading of 75,545 miles, and the gauges are all working as they should. There is a driver's side lower airbag sensor, which the vendor reports to need replacing and also a traction control light is illuminated, which is also thought to be a sensor. The switchgear all looks in good condition with very little wear to the buttons, and everything is reported to be working correctly, including the air conditioning.
The carpets throughout the Jaguar are in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear. Up above, the headlining is free from any stains and sagging. Inside, the boot is also nice and clean and lifting the floor reveals the spare wheel, complete with the jack and wheel brace.
THE EXTERIOR
- Finished in Topaz Silver Gold Metallic
- Two new tyres
- Parking sensors
Elegant and stylish, the S-type resembles the iconic MK2 Jaguar and is finished in this lovely Topaz Silver Gold Metallic; it's a fantastic colour that perfectly suits it. Although the mileage is low for the age of the vehicle, there are a few small chips the car has picked up over the years, as you would expect.
Starting at the front of the Jaguar, the lights are in good order with no splits or cracks to the lenses, and this also includes the lower fog lights. There are, as mentioned, a few stone chips to the bumper but generally less than you expect for the age of the vehicle. The bonnet looks to align nice and straight with an even gap to each wing rail.
Around to the sides, the door shut lines are straight, even and all matching, and the doors open and close as they should. Looking down the sides, there are no apparent dings to point out, just a small light scuff on the front wheel arch and the odd age-related chip. The windows are all in good order with no obvious scratches, and the seals also look in good condition for the age.
At the rear, the light lenses are again free from damage. The boot lid opens and closes as it should and aligns straight and even. Factory rear parking sensors are fitted, and there are no scuffs on the bumper to mention. The wheels are in good order with just some light marks in keeping with the age and mileage, and the tyres have a good amount of tread remaining.
THE MECHANICS
- 3.0 litre V6
- Automatic transmission
- Excellent service history
- Oil service 200 miles ago
The 3.0 V6 engine bay presents really well. The aluminium inlet manifold has minimal signs of tarnishing, and everything seems to be clean and dry looking from the top and underside of the S-type.
The car is reported to start up with no hesitation and runs with no untoward noises coming from the engine. Fitted with an automatic gearbox, the car pulls well through the gears, which have a smooth change.
A fresh MOT was carried out in July 2022, which it passed with no advisories, and it had only covered 174 since the previous MOT in 2021. There is some paperwork that dates back to 2006; at this time, the mileage was 29,000 miles.
SUMMARY
1960 inspired styling with a more modern take on the MK2 Jaguar, the S-type offers classic looks with modern engineering.
This low ownership S-type has a nice spec and has been well maintained, putting it into the serious contender category for anyone wanting to step into a modern-day classic. The car can easily be used daily or put away to be cherished, ready to be used on sunny days.
