The Appeal
The second-generation Range Rover was developed during a period of positive transition when not only did the quality improve, but also just before the car was launched, the injection of BMW money meant that the new P38 was a bit more than a rehashed update of the original.
The Range Rover kept its stylistic cues, body-on-frame design, and reliable V8 engines because Land Rover understood its customers and the fundamental principles it had established.
The revolution happened inside the car, combing an elegant softly contoured cabin with purposeful chunky details. The P38 not only managed to take the Range Rover name further upmarket but also set the precedence for the future of the brand.

The P38 might be seen as an off-roader first and a luxury car second, but it's not a simple conclusion of priorities. While driving over an incline, a stream, or a muddy track, the car's steering, suspension, and braking will make sure you stay out of trouble.
However, the running gear is completely adaptable, and the assisted steering, adjustable ride height, and the ABS also translate into perfect road manners. The P38 is quiet and luxurious, the unstressed V8 is relaxed and the cabin quality is up there with the best.
This 2000 4.0-litre car has seen over £12,500 spent on it over the last decade and cuts a handsome figure in its silver finish and HSE trim.
It comes with 12 months MOT and a recent service.

The History and Paperwork
- Over £12,500 spent over the last decade
- Specialist engineers report
- 12 Months MOT
- Recent air springs and spheres
The current owner bought the car late in 2021, having been drawn to the comfort and regal style of the P38 Range Rover.
With his previous experience of owning solid well looked after up-and-coming classics, he found this example being sold privately. Immediately attracted to the pleasing overall presentation of this car and the impressive volume of invoices.
Many of the big cost items have come from Land Rover specialists Island 4x4 and Rockingham Land Rovers but what really gave this car a head start over the rest of the potential candidates is the work and new parts fitted over the car over a 10-year period. A conservative guess of the spending would be around £9,000.
The car has undergone an ECU remap, a full stainless steel system, a renewed air spring suspension system, steering and brake parts, as well as cosmetic improvements, all of which have been neatly documented along with their invoices.
The upkeep have been carried out on top of the standard hoses, sensors, bushes, and maintenance items. Additionally, the vehicle received a clean bill of health from Absolute Land Rovers, who created an Engineers Report to attest to both the vehicle's sound structural observations and mechanical integrity.
After obtaining the car, the current owner sent the car for a service and has also seen a new radiator, blend motors, and new head gasket fitted by Turner Mechatronics this year at a cost of over £3,500.
A further dig through the invoices reveals an exchange 4.0-litre V8 engine in 2012.
With a car that has seen over £12,500 spent over the last decade, resulting in an impressive clean bill of health, one might pose the question why sell it?
The owner's keen sense of spotting good solid and well-maintained cars has paid dividends once again, when they spotted another P38, with an even more impressive history, so this one is now surplus to his needs.
The car also comes with two keys and a full 12 Months MOT with no advisories.

The Interior
- Well presented interior
- Flip Screen head unit with Bluetooth and DAB
- Electric front seats
- Full Leather
The cabin considering the mileage of the car, is in a remarkably presentable state, no doubt due to the quality materials and the care taken by its previous owners.
The dashboard displays no damage, just a few marks and little sun fade in places. The plastics have lasted well with some minor perishing and marks noted on the centre console, mostly on the softer plastics and veneer.
All of the switchgear, control and dials are in good shape, and all but the air conditioning is functional. A Pioneer Motorised Screen Head Unit has been fitted. It has Bluetooth, DAB functionality and smartphone compatibility, including the usage of its Satellite Navigation connectivity.
All of the electrical functions, such as the windows, sunroof and mirrors work and the fuse box shows no signs of dampness.
The steering wheel is in very good shape, with no significant signs of wear and the gear selector is decent, with a little wear noted on the plate panel. The grey leather seats have lasted well, with some light wear noted on the driver's bolsters but otherwise free of rips or damage. All of the electrically adjustable functions are said to work.
There are minor indentations noted on the rear seat but it still displays well. The cabin carpets are in a clean state with no notable marks and all of the interior fabrics are dry.
The boot is the only thing that reflects the age of the car, but this is mostly limited to wear on the wheel well trim fabric and the parcel shelf. Otherwise, the boot carpet is decent and once again bone dry. The headlining is in excellent shape, with no major marks, sagging or dampness.
The door cards are in good shape, with no damage to the plastics or wood capping and the lower mounted rubber seals like all of the door items are still intact.

The Exterior
- Solid structure
- Positive exterior finish
- Excellent alloys
Structurally the car is in very good shape with a clean underside and no obvious signs of recent off-road use.
The suspension mounts, sills, inner wings and cross members are all looking good and tidy. The body has a good all-round panel fit with even gaps throughout. The doors all open and close without issues, with the tailgate and bonnet struts well up to the task.
There are a handful of minor corrosion spots noted on the offside rear lower arch and corner of the bottom of the front wing but otherwise, the car is free from any additional panel scuffs or dents.

The silver finish goes some way into modernising the overall design, and the black trim really adds to the regality of the car.
The paint finish is very presentable, with no significant issues with the quality or lustre. It has an even coverage of paint that matches consistently.
The front of the car, roof area around the sunroof and lower sections of the tailgate have a few minor marks but otherwise, the car has been spared from general day-to-day mishaps, with the door edges, in particular, looking good.
The black trim is well mounted with no outstanding issues, the nearside door pillars have a few scratches but nothing too distracting. The bumpers show minor scuffs on their corners, which is nothing more than to be expected of a vehicle of this age.
All of the glass and the fully operational sunroof are in very good shape, with no observations of lamination damage, chips or scratches and all appear to have decent seals.
The lights and lenses are in very good shape.

The car is fitted with a pair of after-market chrome door mirrors, which are in good shape.
The Hurricane 18” Alloy wheels are in excellent condition, showing no signs of off-road use. The front tyres are Continentals and are around three years old, and have the legal limit of thread, the rear Goodyear items were fitted last year and are as healthy as to be expected.
The after-market sideboards are structurally able to accommodate weight but the nearside item may need replacement due to corrosion on its mounts but is of no consequence to the integrity of the car.

The Mechanics
- Drives perfectly
- Regular maintenance
- Recent service
- Functioning Suspension
The car starts up without any issues, with none of the warning lights on the dashboard flagging up any issues and remained off.
The engine was left to run for at least 15 minutes in the heat, with no ill effects. The fan did not cut in and the engine temperature gauge remained stable. There were no exhaust fumes or evidence of poor running as the engine idled sweetly. No fluid leaks were observed on the day.

It appears that consecutive owners, including the current one, have spent a considerable amount of effort to ensure that the car drives right and a 10-minute demonstration drive revealed this to be the case.
The quality of the ride, as it wafts along the urban roads was effortless, with no vibrations noted on the steering wheel. The owner pointed out that the typically light steering and long-travel pedal are suited for off-road use, but actually suit the P38’s grand demeanour on the road.
The ABS brakes are very effective, with no pulling to one side in use and stopping the car evenly without drama. The gearbox is slick and engages gears without any slippage.
The car is well-cosseted inside, with no significant noises or rattles heard from the running gear. The air suspension was tested with no ill effects noted on their function.
The engine presentation is functional, but closer inspection reveals that the important elements such as the hoses, ancillaries and wiring are clean and evidently well maintained.
