HIGHLIGHTS
- Extremely rare Accord Coupe
- 3.0-litre 24v V6
- Well-equipped
- Great comfort and performance
THE APPEAL
Here’s something a little bit different for lovers of quirky and unusual 1990s and 2000s classics. Honda’s Accord Coupe was never a huge seller in the UK as its V6-only powertrain and substantial dimensions weren’t in keeping with mainstream tastes.
Yet to those who know, it’s a fabulous car. Based on the US-market Accord and therefore longer and wider than the Swindon-built Euro Accord, it’s a soft-riding luxury Grand Tourer rather than a sports car. And in styling terms, it’s very, very cool.
This one is a scarce survivor having had just two owners from new.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Original manuals and owner wallet
- UK V5C
- Long MOT
- Service invoices
The Accord appears to have spent most of its life in the Midlands and comes with a Honda dealer wallet, several old receipts and an MOT valid until January 2023. There’s a service booklet that appears to have been stamped by a Renault dealership for the first 14 years of the car’s life, then by an independent thereafter.
THE INTERIOR
- Tan leather with heated electric seats
- Sunroof
- Cruise and climate control
- BOSE speakers
Being an US-manufactured car, it’s no surprise to find that the Accord Coupe is sumptuously well equipped. Heated, electrically adjustable leather seats, cruise control, climate control and high-power BOSE surround sound speakers – it’s all there and in good working order. The only flaw is some wear to the driver’s side seta bolster, though it’s by no means a big deal and could easily be sorted with some careful needlework.
THE EXTERIOR
- Dark metallic green
- Excellent order with no apparent rust
- Smart, original condition
Finished in a rich dark metallic green, the Accord is a sensational looking car in the way that only a large coupé can be. It’s solid and well-presented, with no major damage or issues.
Look closely and you’ll find a few small scuffs and marks commensurate with age, along with some lacquer peel on the rear wing tops and on the passenger door. The vendor has had the roof and bootlid painted, where the lacquer was crazed and damaged, so overall the car looms very good indeed.
The alloy wheels are smart enough, but so have some delamination in places so a perfectionist would prefer to refurbish them.
THE MECHANICS
- 3.0-litre 24v V6
- Four-speed automatic transmission
- Smooth and responsive
- No known faults
It’s the engine that’s the star turn in this car – a super-smooth 24-valve 3.0-litre V6 that’s closely related to the one found in the NSX supercar. It develops 197bhp, which – allied to a four-speed ‘Hondamatic’ transmission – give is a 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of double the legal limit, so it’s fair to say it’s no slouch.
It starts on the button and runs very smoothly indeed, going through all the gears as it should and with no untoward noises form the steering, brakes or suspension.
SUMMARY
If you want a modern-ish, usable classic that’s a bit different from the norm, then this is well worth a look. It’s an unusual but extremely charming car, with ample performance and oodles of comfort, plus a hugely impressive specification. It’s a genuine rarity, and you’re unlikely to see another one coming the other way…
