NO RESERVE - 1999 Volkswagen Mk4 Golf V5 Auto

Highlights

  • Rare V5 model
  • Automatic transmission
  • Just 26,008 miles
  • Three owners from new
  • Excellent condition

The Appeal

While the Mk4 Golf V5 may just look like “another Golf” from the outside, it benefitted from a quirky and really quite excellent drivetrain. It was fitted with VW’s unusual VR5 engine that actually offered more power than the contemporary GTI, as well as more torque and a much nicer exhaust note.
Here we have a vanishingly rare example too – one that has covered just 26,008 miles and is in unmodified, factory spec. As such, if you’re in the market for a rare and sprightly modern retro hatchback, something with real potential for becoming a future classic, then this has to be considered.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in June 1999
  • Three owners from new
  • The first two owners were a mother and son, who owned the car from 1999 to 2022
  • MOT to 24th June 2023
  • It has never failed an MOT test
  • Complete with the owner’s handbook and two sets of keys
  • History file with a number of maintenance / servicing invoices
  • VW service history shows three stamps: 19,916 miles (2018), 20,767 miles (2020) and 23,760 miles (October 2022)

The Interior

  • Light grey fabric upholstery presents in excellent condition
  • The seats show no signs of sagging, significant wear or tearing
  • Headlining is secure and intact, with no damage or staining we could see
  • Grey vinyl and grey fabric inserts adorn the door cards, with the usual Mk4 Golf issues of some sagging to the fabric inserts
  • Grey carpets are complemented by the original grey floor mats and all look in very good order, with no notable damage or staining
  • Electric windows and door mirrors
  • Factory fitted electric glass sunroof
  • Original VW radio-cassette system
  • Climate control / air conditioning
  • The boot carpet is in excellent condition, underneath the floor presents very well too, with no damage, repair or corrosion evident
  • There is a full size spare wheel and the original toolkit, which appears to be unused

The Exterior

  • Subtle silver paintwork is in nice, original condition with a few minor blemishes and some light scuffs to the bumper
  • All of the bodywork looks to be in fine fettle, with no significant damage or corrosion apparent and neat, even panel gaps
  • All of the external badging and trim shows well, with clear headlamps and, as far as we can tell, nothing missing
  • It should be noted that the near-side rear light cluster has a hole in it and will require replacing before the next MOT
  • The factory-fitted, five-spoke, 16-inch alloy wheels appear to be in excellent condition and are shod in a good set of Continental tyres which look to have decent tread levels
  • Underneath the car presents very well indeed, with the floors and sills looking clean and straight and just a little light surface corrosion to the drivetrain in places

The Mechanics

  • 2.3-litre V5 drivetrain driving the front wheels
  • Automatic transmission
  • The engine bay appears to be nice and clean, with no evidence of leaks or overheating we could identify

Summary

If you’re after something a little different, but with a Q-car vibe and real potential as a future classic, we heartily recommend this handsome and well presented Golf. It’s sure to make its next keeper very happy indeed.
