THE APPEAL
1969 was a great year for road movies, with Vanishing Point and The Italian Job keeping car fans happy. But there was another film that was arguably even more of a cult movie.
Directed by and starring Dennis Hopper, with a cast that included Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson, Easy Rider was a road film that explored the social tapestry of the USA as the Sixties grew to a close, as much about the politics, societal unease and attitudes of the time as it was about adventure. With a soundtrack fronted by Roger McGuinn of the Byrds and largely written by Bob Dylan, it was a guaranteed classic, as, indeed, was the Harley-Davidson ridden by Peter Fonda in the film as Captain America.
The chopper-style bike was destroyed in an accident at the end of the movie, but now’s your chance to own a reincarnated version. Built as a lockdown project and based on a Harley-Davidson XL 1200 C, this custom-built chopper is a visual replica of Fonda’s famous two-wheeler. It’s beautifully recreated and has barely been used since completion.

SUMMARY
Peter Fonda in Easy Rider is up there with James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause and Steve McQueen in Bullitt in the achingly cool stakes, which means having the chance to emulate him aboard a replica of the Captain America bike is a tantalising opportunity. This one’s a cracker as well – a really well-finished and executed build, with an exquisite level of finish.
Here’s your chance to get out there on the long open road and enjoy it for the summer – after all, to quote Peter Fonda’s character Wyatt Williams, “what the hell’s wrong with freedom, man?”
