NO RESERVE - 1994 Jaguar XJ6 Gold (XJ40)

*** Interested parties should note, this vehicle was subject to a CAT C insurance loss in 09/2002 ***

Highlights

  • Desirable ‘Gold’ edition with twin coachlines, gold-plated grille badge and Kiwi alloys
  • MOT valid until November 2023 with no advisories
  • Has seen regular use in current ownership, making it a reliable example that drives well

The Appeal

When the time finally came to replace the elegant yet ageing Series III XJ6, the Jaguar XJ40 incorporated modern angular design language and modern safety features, all the while ensuring that the car remained instantly recognisable as an XJ.
Here we have one of the last XJ40s ever made, marketed as the XJ6 ‘Gold’ edition. The vendor informs us that it has recently been fitted with a Daimler interior, adding further luxury to an already cosseting cabin. Presented in good, usable condition, this Jaguar has been used regularly as part of the vendor’s classic car tour business and so has proved to be a reliable vehicle in recent years.

The History and Paperwork

  • 118,652 miles indicated on the digital odometer which is supported by the MOT history
  • MOT valid until November 2023
  • 14 previous keepers indicated on the V5C
  • Original XJ6 handbook present along with the Gold edition brochure
  • Acquired by the vendor from a Jaguar enthusiast in Sheffield who purchased the car from an independent specialist a few years earlier
  • Besides regular servicing, we’re informed no major work was required during current ownership
  • We’re informed that the car has been garaged when not in use
  • V5C present

The Interior

  • Recently fitted with a cream Daimler interior
  • Separate rear seats as per Daimler specification
  • Besides some general wear to the leather upholstery, the seats continue to present well and remain very usable
  • As you’d expect, the driver’s seat exhibits the most wear and would benefit from a clean
  • We’re informed the door cards were not replaced along with the remainder of the interior but match well
  • The veneers continue to present well with just a few imperfections
  • The dashboard and centre armrest are a subtly different shade to the upholstery, but this is not especially noticeable
  • Daimler rear window blinds fitted
  • All the electrics reportedly work, including the radio
  • The headlining has started to sag at the rear
  • Overall, this is a very presentable interior which remains eminently usable

The Exterior

  • Red metallic paint with twin coachlines
  • The vendor believes that the paintwork is largely original
  • No obvious signs of corrosion to the bodywork
  • The vendor points out some microblistering to the bonnet as well as a poor repair to the offside edge where the body filler has started to crack
  • There are some scratches at the back and some small dents in the offside rear panel
  • Besides the imperfections, this remains a handsome example in good overall condition
  • The underside appears very sound
  • The bumpers show their age in places but remain complete
  • The trim is in reasonable shape and continues to shine
  • Now fitted with a gold grille which complements the gold badge
  • Fitted with an electric sunroof which apparently works well
  • Kiwi style alloys wheels in good condition

The Mechanics

  • 3.2-litre AJ6 engine
  • When the vendor acquired the car, there was little record of past servicing so we’re informed that they initially carried out a major service
  • Subsequently, the vendor has carried out general servicing at around every 3,000 miles with local specialists and in their own garage
  • Recently fitted with a new battery
  • We’re informed that this example has been reliable and runs smoothly
  • Drives well, with reportedly no issues or untoward noises
  • Automatic gearbox with ‘J-Gate’ shifter

Summary

If you’re looking for a usable everyday classic, or else, a luxurious way to waft about on the weekend, this could be the perfect car for you.
