Highlights
- Very original inside and out
- Worn, yet usable leather interior
- Largely straight bodywork with presentable paintwork
The Appeal
The Jaguar XJS is still widely believed to be amongst the greatest grand tourers of the twentieth century. Fine examples are now highly sought after, making an XJS project car such as this a great proposition.
With a current MOT until March 2023 and in very original condition both inside and out, this 4.0-litre AJ6-engined XJS has fantastic project potential. If, like many of us, you’re itching to get your hands on a winter project, this Jaguar would be a wonderful thing to add to your garage.
The History and Paperwork
- Cherished “XJS” registration included in the sale
- Accompanied by a great deal of paperwork
- V5C present
- Numerous old MOT certificates
- There are a great number of invoices for past work, servicing and parts
- Jaguar document wallet
- Original owner’s manuals and service book
- MOT valid until March 2023
The Interior
- Cream leather seats are quite worn but remain serviceable and free from significant damage
- As you would expect, the rear seats appear less worn
- The leather surrounding the centre console and covering the door cards presents well considering the car’s age
- All of the veneers on the dashboard and doors looks to be in good order and not in need of refinishing
- All of the instrumentation and switchgear appears in good condition although they are untested
- The vendor describes the condition of the carpets as “fair”, which we agree with
- The headlining is sagging at the rear so will require some work
- Inside the boot, the grey carpeting presents really well and we couldn’t see any signs of any water ingress
The Exterior
- The vendor believes the red paint to be original
- There is a fair amount of lacquer peel, although the paint is quite presentable when you consider that the car is almost 30 years old
- The vendor points out a split in the front spoiler which is also heavily chipped / scraped
- We also noticed some damage to the rear spoiler
- The bodywork appears to be very straight and we couldn’t see any signs of accident damage
- Underneath, there are some areas that appear corroded and will require investigation
- Some of the suspension components look to be quite corroded, as is the exhaust
- All of the undertrays appear in good condition and complete
- The alloy wheels display a little damage and signs of deterioration although we think they are in good enough condition to refurbish
- The vendor informs us that plenty of tread remains on the tyres
The Mechanics
- 4.0-litre AJ6 engine
- The gearbox was reportedly reconditioned 6 years ago
- The car does suffer from some brake judder
- Under the bonnet, the straight-six engine looks to be in fair condition and all the ancillaries appear complete and in good order
- Runs and drives quite well, changing gear smoothly,
- The car is not smoking or leaking fluids
Summary
We think this XJS would be a fantastic project to get your teeth into this winter. It certainly has a lot going for it: It still has an MOT, is complete and many hard to attain parts such as the interior look to be in salvageable condition.
If you dream of grand touring in a bright red Jaguar, we think this car is an excellent starting point.
