Highlights
- Rare “Dash” Limited Edition
- Two-tone paintwork
- Mostly original and unmodified
The Appeal
The 90s are big right now and cars from the era are ever more popular among collectors and enthusiasts. And few brands have the same cachet as Ford amongst fans of everyday classics.
Here we have a smart convertible Escort, presented in good condition. Built as a marketing tie-in with Dash clothing to promote their summer 1992 fashion range, this special addition was only available for less than a year, so is an increasingly rare and collectible vehicle.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered in March 1993
- Seven owners from new
- Last owner since 2012
- Matching numbers
- MOT to July 2023
- Previous MOT certificates included
Unfortunately, the car does not come with its handbook or much in the way of service history. But the MOT history does confirm the mileage and shows the car has been well cared for, with no advisories in the last two years.
The Interior
- ‘Space’ velour upholstery
- Sony radio/cassette system
- Electric windows
- Heated glass rear screen
Featuring Ford’s bespoke ‘Space’ velour upholstery, the cabin of this Escort is a riot of 90s styling. The seats are soft and deeply cushioned, presenting in good condition. They show minimal wear for the age, and the upholstery on the seats and across the door cards is very tidy with no notable wear, damage or tears. Grey carpeting runs through the passenger compartment and boot area, and is in largely good condition.
All of the interior trim elements are present and correct and similarly show minimal wear for the age of the vehicle. The instrument cluster, switchgear and controls look good, especially when you consider the vehicle is almost 30 years old. The vendor tells us that everything works as it should, with no issues they are aware of.
The Exterior
- Maroon / Moon Dust Silver two-tone paintwork
- Red fabric roof
- Original 5-spoke 15” alloys
Finished in a none-more-90s two-tone colour scheme, this Escort is a striking survivor. So many of these Escorts have fallen prey to corrosion, but this example presents very well, appearing solid and straight with no visible signs of significant corrosion or accident damage.
The paint is a little dull, with light scratches, minor blemishes and some stone-chipping (particularly to the front grille and bonnet). But a little time spent polishing should soon bring it back to somewhere near its best. There is a small amount of bubbling by the offside rear wheel arch, along the sill lip and by the fuel filler cap, but nothing that would concern us unduly.
All of the external trim is intact and complete, with no cracks or damage to the mirrors, glass, lights or other trim elements. There is a scuff to the nearside of the rear bumper, but otherwise all the trim looks to be in a good state.
It’s topped with a red fabric roof, which is overall in good condition, with just a small tear in the rear offside corner. This complements the two-tone paintwork perfectly and really sets the car off.
This Escort is riding on classic fan-style, 5-spoke 15” alloys. Generally they are in good condition, with no notable damage, just a little lacquer peel on the centre-caps. They’re shod with good tyres, which appear to have good tread.
The Mechanics
- 1,392cc 4-cylinder engine
- Manual 5-speed transmission
- Power steering
This Mark 5 Escort features Ford’s 1.4 CVH engine, which is tuned for economy and produces 75bhp. Twinned with the 5-speed manual, it provides more than enough power for a small 4-seat cabriolet.
Under the bonnet, the engine bay looks today and clean, with some surface corrosion on a few components, but no signs of leaks or any issues.
The vendor assures us that the car drives nicely, with no mechanical issues that they are aware of.
Summary
Perfect for modern retro car shows (it’s an ideal vehicle for Festival of the Unexceptional or Radwood), this original and very ‘of its time’ car is a sure-fire future classic.
Coming with a long MOT and a great colour scheme, with a little work this could soon be a show-winning modern classic. With parts widely available and inexpensive, it makes it the perfect car for the enthusiast on a budget, or a great starter classic.
