NO RESERVE - 1990 Volkswagen Golf GTI 8v

Highlights

  • In present ownership for the last twenty years
  • Nicely presented and very original example
  • Really smart interior with few signs of use

The Appeal

To many, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is the definitive hot hatchback and early examples like this MkII are now highly sought after by collectors. This example has been owned by the vendor for twenty years now but as they no longer get the opportunity to use it as much as they would like, it is now seeking a new home.
Well presented in its handsome Helios Blue paint and with a particularly smart interior, this Golf is ready to start a new chapter of its life with its next owner. If you’re looking for a fun little hot hatch, then we heartily recommend this GTI.

The History and Paperwork

  • Owned by the vendor for the past 20 years, bought for them by their father
  • We’re informed that the vendor had the car recommissioned in 2012 at a cost of £1,576
  • There isn’t a stamped service book, but the vendor informs us they have invoices for all services and MOT tests during their ownership
  • Has only been driven 2,638 miles in the past eleven years (which is when it was put back on the road)
  • Currently stored in a dry garage where it as been under cover for nearly a year
  • V5C present
  • Collection of invoices for parts
  • MOT valid until March 2023

The Interior

  • Plaid interior has very little wear
  • Looks to be very original
  • The seats are in fabulous condition and evoke the style of the late ‘80s
  • The carpet looks to be in fine condition
  • We’re informed the headlining is starting to become unstuck in a few places
  • The dashboard is in great shape with all the dials and switches working including the trip computer
  • Inside the boot, all appears in good order and there are a collection of overmats

The Exterior

  • Helios Blue paintwork
  • The bodywork is very straight overall, with a small dent on the nearside rear wing
  • We’re informed that the shell is very solid
  • There is a little surface rust where the paint has come away in some localised areas
  • Looks to be smart underneath
  • Slight bubbling on the scuttle panel
  • It appears the boot badge is missing although all the other badges are in good condition
  • We could see a stone chip in the windscreen
  • Dealer stickers in the rear window
  • Discrete rear spoiler and two-door body style make this a rather fetching example
  • The OZ alloy wheels really suit it and are in good shape with just a few small marks

The Mechanics

  • 1.8-litre four-cylinder, eight-valve engine powering the front wheels
  • Five-speed gearbox
  • What these GTIs are all about is the driving and this lightweight little hot hatch does not disappoint on a twisty B-road
  • Starts really well and settles down to a steady idle once warm
  • Reportedly drives really well, with no faults to report

Summary

This is a really great example of the MkII Golf GTI and we’re sure many motoring adventures await it in the future.
