The Appeal
This stunning BMW is the last of the analogue cars and brings only what is required for a true driving enthusiast’s experience, fuel injection, an excellent 5 speed manual transmission, and power steering. The car has had no expense spared when it comes to maintenance, and has had plenty of work carried out to ensure the car is very original, and no detail has been overlooked to ensure this car delivers the pinnacle of E30 driving pleasure.
The History and Paperwork
- This stunning Baur BMW 316i is one of only 83 in this configuration sold in the UK, it is the 10,297th convertible with a glorious royal indigo blue top.
- This was purchased to go alongside another E30, and has clearly been exceptionally well looked after and cared for by its classic car enthusiast keeper.
- Two service books are present, along with various other books and documentation, including a duplicate service booklet that contains over 40 stamps over the course of its life, mostly from a BMW main dealer.
- While the car is high mileage, the engine was replaced at 172,000 miles and as such the new engine has a mere 48,000 miles on it so it is very healthy and photographic evidence as to its condition is present.
- The vehicle has clearly been dry stored throughout its life.
- The current keeper upon purchase of the vehicle took it to a trusted independent BMW specialists for a thorough inspection, service and to get an overall picture of the vehicle’s condition.
The Interior
- This fine interior is in incredible condition, and everything works correctly and as it should.
- It is finished in fantastic royal indigo blue fabric upholstery with the seats in fantastic condition and the bolsters still feeling fresh and firm.
- The dashboard is in excellent shape and crack free, which is a very pleasant find in an E30 of this age.
- There are almost no signs of wear on the gauges or switches, all of which are in mint condition.
- A great retro touch is the cassette holder, which is in good working condition however has a slight burn mark left by the previous keeper.
- Door cards are colour matched to the rest of the interior in royal indigo blue and are in beautiful shape.
- The original OEMplus matts in correct colour are present and are still plush and overall in brilliant shape, with only the driver's heel area slightly worn.
- The knee panel does have a tear in it at present however a good quality original replacement has been sourced by the keeper and will be fitted before the sale.
- The excellent sounding, period correct Blaupunkt stereo is still present with dashboard mounted tweeters, and the radio code is included.
- In the boot is the original OEM tool kit and triangle, all is present and correct.
- A truly excellent place to be, this fine interior is in remarkable condition and just transports you back in time to the excellent, unadulterated E30 driving experience.
The Exterior
- Original 14” BBS “Basketweave” wheels, these are totally original and have never been refurbished including the original centre caps that have only had new gaskets fitted to ensure they fit securely. These stunning wheels are in truly sublime condition and are shod with high quality Continental tyres all round.
- All of the lighting glass is clear and free of marks and blemishes, very well cared for.
- The vehicle has also had a very thorough detail and ceramic coat, which will ensure the paint remains well preserved.
- The BMW badges show a light patina, which really adds character to the car and adds to the original feel.
- The top is in excellent condition, and slides easily into the boot runners.
- There is a small tear on the near side rear of the hood, which would benefit from attention, and the corner border around the windscreen has some wear. The rear screen is in excellent condition and is not cloudy, with excellent visibility.
- The leather button-down hood cover is also in excellent condition, and has retained its colour and elasticity nicely.
- Overall, a stunning exterior on this glorious Baur.
Finished in a wonderful gloss white paint, the car really gleams and is certainly a head turner. The paint is overall in exceptional condition, and has had work carried out to remedy some corrosion that was starting in the wheel arches. The nearside rear has a small blemish and there are some small marks and scuffs to the front trim, however these are only what would be expected with age and do not detract from the cars overall condition.
The Mechanics
- This car has had the distinct advantage of having been owned by a very knowledgeable keeper who has ensured no expense was spared on fastidious mechanical maintenance and servicing. As such the car starts first time and runs, drives and handles beautifully.
- The car has had a replacement engine during the previous keepers ownership, replaced at 172,000 miles, as such the engine is in brilliant condition with very few miles covered to date.
- When the car was purchased by the current keeper it was taken to an independent specialist for a thorough service and inspection. It was at this time that the car received fresh fluids, oil and fuel filters, a high quality cambelt kit and new spark plugs. The top end of the engine was inspected and found to be in superb condition, with the oil spray bar and cams in top shape.
- Due to the car’s dry storage, the car is very clean mechanically and under the body and is very corrosion free, including in the boot where the seals were removed and photographed to demonstrate excellent sealing and a total lack of any water ingress.
- A point of note is that the fuel hoses have all been replaced with updated, E5 compliant versions.
- The gearbox feels excellent, and is a real joy to drive with the clutch fluid replacement having been carried out and has really transformed the shifting.
- Lots of new rubber components, intake boots and hoses have been recently
- replaced. Also some tired rubber suspension bushes and top mounts were replaced
- with OEM specification parts which have restored the cars handling perfectly.
- The underside has been preserved with clear Waxoyl and everything is exceptionally clean underneath the car and under the bonnet.
Summary
A truly stunning example of the marque, this is a very hard E30 to find fault with and has been extremely well kept by a discerning, enthusiast keeper. The car is in sublime condition throughout and has been meticulously maintained to ensure the car will be a joy to drive for years to come. If you are looking for a Baur E30, look no further.
