NO RESERVE - 1987 Fiat Panda 4x4 (Mk1)

Highlights

  • Rare original UK car, right-hand drive example
  • Drives very well with functioning 4x4 system
  • Low mileage for the year
  • Interior in very good original condition

The Appeal

This is a fantastic opportunity to purchase a rare UK-supplied RHD Panda in far stronger mechanical condition than most.

With working four-wheel drive and a functional snorkel, it is ready for whatever the new owner wants to throw at it. It has clearly been cared for throughout its life, with low mileage for the age, a tidy engine bay and an original interior in very good order.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 in current owner’s name is present
  • MOT until February 2023
  • Recent invoice for a pair of new rear shock absorbers and wheel alignment
  • Front brake pipe replaced and the rear brakes stripped and cleaned, fluid replaced
The car was stolen recovered in 2018 but no damage was done to the vehicle whatsoever, and it was returned to the present owner unharmed.

The Interior

  • Very original condition
  • Push button starter fitted
  • Seats, carpets and headlining in excellent order
On the inside, the Panda is in overall very nice original condition, with the seats, door cards and dashboard fabrics holding up fantastically well to 35 years of use. The plastics are in good order too, while the steering wheel shows only very minor signs of wear.
All of the switchgear works including the lights (which turn on with the ignition), windows, gauges, wipers and heater. There is no stereo fitted, and while the wonderfully retro Blaupunkt speakers are present in the rear, it is unknown whether they are functional.
Carpets, headlining and other bits of trim are in really good condition, with no rips or tears in any of them. With a deep clean, the interior would no doubt come up an absolute treat.
The only real major modification on the inside is the push button starter, which replaces the original ignition system. While it is fun and convenient to use, prospective buyers should note that the vehicle does not require a key to start the engine.

There are keys for the door locks, however.

The Exterior

  • Repainted in famous Land Rover Camel Trophy colours
  • All body panels are nice straight
  • Glass, trim, wheels and lights are in excellent condition
Bodywork is generally in really nice shape, with no significant dents or scrapes to be found anywhere on the outside. Exterior plastics are nice and straight, too.
The exterior of the car has been repainted in orange some point in its life, as the engine bay and interior panels would appear to indicate that it was originally white. The bonnet is partially black as are the roof and wheels, with the colour scheme and graphics intended as a cheeky tribute to famous Camel Trophy Land Rovers.
The repainting has been completed to a decent standard, and the Panda wears its colours tremendously well, and looks every inch the baby off-road adventurer.
There are a couple of scratches on the doors as well as some bubbling above the wheel arches and corrosion on the bottom of the doors, all of which is shown in the photographs.

The Mechanics

  • 4x4 system works as it should
  • Drives well, well cared for
  • Very tidy engine bay
  • Functional snorkel fitted
On the mechanical side, the Panda is said to drive very well for its age with surprisingly nippy performance from the 1.0-litre petrol engine.

It sounds great in its own charismatic way, although the MOT advisories note a minor leak coming from the exhaust. Tyres have a great deal of life in them, too.
The gearbox functions nicely with no crunching between gears and, perhaps more importantly, the lever-activated four-wheel drive system works correctly, engaging and disengaging properly when selected.
Lifting the bonnet reveals a seriously tidy engine bay in excellent and predominantly original condition, with no obvious leaks to speak of. The only major modification is the snorkel, which not only looks cool but is said to be functional and allows this Panda to travel where others can’t.
The owner states while the underside does have some surface rust it is solid overall, with no holes or major damage to note, which is partially as result of it being kept in a garage. To get the Panda perfect and protect it for the future, it would need to be cleaned up and treated.

Summary

This is a fabulous and honest example of the Mk2 Panda, and a rarity in both 4x4 and right-hand drive specification.

The condition of the interior and the mechanical components are demonstrative of a car that has been loved and cared for throughout its life as well as being enjoyed at the same time – something that the new owner will no doubt do.
