Highlights
- Beautiful interior
- It is reported to run
- Has a lot of potential
The Appeal
No other badge provides the same lure as the Bentley badge does. You know that you’re in for a luxurious ride before you get in, and who doesn’t want that from their car? This variant has a wonderful interior, but the mechanical elements will need a bit of work to get it back out on the road.
The History and Paperwork
- There isn’t a vast amount of paperwork present with this Bentley
- But there is an up to date V5 and a Bentley instruction book
- More recently the car has been acquired by the current owner to use it for work
- Since then, it has been, unfortunately, jumped the wrong way around meaning the car doesn’t start the normal way
- With a bit of jiggery-pokery, it will start and run, but this wasn’t attempted on the day of the photos
- When it is running the back suspension should raise up and return to its normal height
- This will be a great little project over the winter to get your teeth into
The Interior
- Despite the ‘project’ nature of the car, the interior is in wonderful shape
- As you’d expect from Bentley the interior is filled with high-end and luxurious touches
- All of the seats are trimmed in this beautiful cream leather
- The driver’s seat will always experience the most use, but this seat wears its age well
- There is some slight surface cracking but there doesn’t appear to be any rips or tears
- The front passenger seat is much the same but shows even less wear
- In the rear are two large seats with an armrest dividing the two
- Usually used less the rear seats are always preserved better
- In this Bentley, the rear seats are in lovely condition and ready to be sat in
- Beneath the seats are a set of dark emerald green carpets
- Protected by matching over mats they look to be in good condition on the whole
- In front of the drive is a vast expanse of wood veneer trim
- There is some patina to this trim around the dials, but this can be expected from a car of its age
- With a quick interior detail, it should be an excellent place to sit and watch the miles tick by
- Another area that needs some work is the boot, the tailgate does open and close but will not latch
- The inner workings have been exposed but not fixed yet
- Overall, the interior is in good condition and just waiting to be used
The Exterior
- Outside this Mulsanne is also in rather good condition
- The bodywork has been preserved well over the years with the paintwork looking good
- Its simple and understated silver paint will simply fly under the radar
- There are some spots of minor paint bubbling that you may wish to clear up before the spread
- Up front, the original headlights have been removed with the intention of replacing them with the newer, face-lifted versions
- Unfortunately, what showed up with the current owner was not as described so they still require the indicators
- The original lights are still with the car but some of the lenses have been misplaced
- Once you have the lights in place, they do look about ten times better than the older versions
- The exterior doesn’t need too much work and is in very presentable condition
The Mechanics
- This is a section where the Bentley Mulsanne is built to excel
- Known for their superior ride quality there is nothing like getting behind the wheel
- Under the bonnet is the legendary 6 ¾ litre engine that has powered so many of these vehicles
- The engine bay looks to be very clean with some of the original padding remaining under the bonnet
- Although it didn’t start up on the day, it was driven to the location fairly recently
- It has also been started recently by bypassing certain relays
- Hopefully, it is a simple fix, and it can be back on the road before you know it
- With the car running the rear suspension should return to its proper height
Summary
This Bentley Mulsanne has bucket loads of potential, with some money spent on it this will be a luxurious modern classic for a lot less than a run-of-the-mill VW Golf. Doesn’t that sound like the deal of the century?
